Crossover Ethernet Cable

A crossover cable
has different ends.

A crossover cable can be used to:

Connect 2 computers directly.


Connect a router's LAN port to a
switch/hub's normal port. (normally
used for expanding network)
Connect 2 switches/hubs by using
normal port in both switches/hubs

A straight-thru cable
has identical ends.

A straight-through cable can be used
to:
Connect a computer to a switch/hub's
normal port.
Connect a computer to a cable/DSL
modem's LAN port.
Connect a router's WAN port to a
cable/DSL modem's LAN port.
Connect a router's LAN port to a
switch/hub's uplink port. (normally
used for expanding network)
Connect 2 switches/hubs with one of
the switch/hub using an uplink port
and the other one using normal port.

METHODS OF CRIMPING

Let’s Make Some cable

1. Strip one end of the cable with


the stripper or a knife
and diags.
(This will strip about
1/2" of the jacket off
the cable.)

2. Spread and arrange the pairs


roughly in the order
of the desired cable
end.

3. Untwist the pairs and arrange


the wires in the order
of the desired cable
end. Trim the ends of
the wires so they are
even with one another.
( It is very important that the
unstripped end be slightly
less than 1/2" long. )

4. Hold the RJ-45 plug with the clip


facing down or away
from you.
Push the wire firmly into
the plug. Now, inspect
the darn thing... before
crimping and wasting
the plug!

5. Hold the wire near the RJ-45


plug with the clip down and
firmly push it into the left side of
the front of the crimper. Hold the
wire in place squeeze the crimper
handles quite firmly. This is what
will happen:

6. Test the crimp…


7. Prepare the other end of the cable so
it has the desired end and crimp.
8. If both ends of the cable are within
reach, hold them next to each other
and with RJ-45 clips facing away.
9. Test the cable.
