Trigonometric Functions

The document discusses rules for differentiating trigonometric and exponential functions. It provides 17 examples of applying the rules to find derivatives of various functions containing sin, cos, tan, csc, sec, cot and exponential terms. The examples include finding derivatives of composite trigonometric functions, as well as exponential functions with variables in their exponents. The document was produced by the Bureau of Curriculum Development within the Department of Education.

RULE 7: Derivatives of Trigonometric Functions

a. Dx (sin u) = cos u ∙ du/dx
b. Dx (cos u) = -sin u ∙ du/dx
c. Dx (tan u) = sec2u ∙ du/dx
d. Dx (cot u) = -csc2u ∙ du/dx
e. Dx (sec u) = sec u tan u ∙ du/dx
f. Dx (csc u) = -csc u cot u ∙ du/dx

RULE 8: The Derivative of Exponential Function

If f(x) = eu then f '(x) = eu ∙ du/dx

Example 1. Differentiate y = sin 3x5
Sol. Dx (sin u) = cos u ∙ du/dx
let u = 3x5; du/dx = 15x4
y’ = cos (3x5) (15x4)
4
= 15x cos 3x 5

2. Differentiate y = sin (3x+1)

y’ = cos (3x+1) (3)
= 3cos (3x+1)

3. Differentiate y = cos 2x
Sol. Dx (cos u) = -sin u ∙ du/dx
y’ = -sin 2x (2)
= -2 sin 2x
4. Differentiate y = cos ( -4x+5)
y’ = -sin (-4x+5) (-4)
= 4 sin (-4x+5)

5. Differentiate y = sin x cos x

y’ = sin x( -sinx) + cosx(cosx)
= -sin2 x + cos2 x

6. Differentiate y = tan 5x
Dx (tan u) = sec2u ∙ du/dx
2
= sec (5x) (5)
= 5 sec2 5x

7. Differentiate y = tan x2
y’ = sec 2
(2x) x 2

= 2x sec2 x2

8. Differentiate y = sin x / tan x

sin 𝑥
y = sin 𝑥 = cos 𝑥
cos 𝑥
y’ = -sin x

9. Differentiate y = sec ( 3x2 + 5x)

Dx (sec u) = sec u tan u ∙ du/dx

= sec ( 3x2 + 5x) tan ( 3x2 + 5x) (6x + 5)
= (6x+5) sec ( 3x2 + 5x) tan ( 3x2 + 5x)

(2𝑥+3)
10. Differentiate y = sec
4𝑥+5

4𝑥+5 2 −(2𝑥+3)(4)
= (4𝑥+5)2
−2
=
(4𝑥+5)2

thus, y’ =
−2 sec (2𝑥+3) tan (2𝑥+3)
(4𝑥+5)2 4𝑥+5 4𝑥+5

12. Differentiate y = cot (2x2 + 4x -1)

y’ = - (4x+4) csc 2 (2x2 + 4x -1)
