PIN FINs

This document discusses heat transfer characteristics of pin fins. It examines research on the effects of pin fin shape, configuration, clearance ratios, and arrangements (inline vs staggered) on heat transfer and pressure drop. Key findings include staggered arrangements providing better heat transfer than inline, smaller clearance ratios increasing heat transfer, and circular pin fins displaying the most efficient thermal performance compared to other shapes like hexagon and square. The document also evaluates using pin fins in applications like microchannels, boiling enhancement, and nanofluid cooled heat sinks.

INTRODUCTION

Extended surfaces from the body that increase the heat

transfer between stream of fluid and the solid body
Conduction within the material and convection between
surroundings and pin fin
Used in cooling electronic equipments, motors etc.
Industrial experience has shown that for the same surface
area, pin fins can transfer considerably more energy than
plate fins.
For Pin Fin Arrays
 The most important geometric parameter affecting the
convective performance of a pin fin array is the ratio
of fin diameter of spacing, D/W.
 Inline arrangement has higher heat tranfer rate than
the staggard arrangements.
 Inclination does not have a significant effect on the
heat transfer. Arrays inclined by 15 ° or 30 ° to the
vertical behave almost the same as vertical arrays.
Entropy and Exergy

 Entropy production is directly related to the

destruction of exergy or availability in a thermal
system. Minimizing exergy destruction as means of
maximizing thermodynamic performance.
 There are two sources of entropy generation in fins.
One is due to heat transfer between two streams of
different temperature, and the second one is due to
friction between the heat transfer surfaces and moving
fluids.
Two Methods
 Exergy Method: uses only the first law, second law,
and the properties of the environment.
 Entropy Method (EGM): EGM characteristics are
system modeling, development of the entropy
generation rate as a function of the model parameters,
and the ability to minimize the entropy generation
rate
Contd…..
 Sgen = Sgenh+Sgenf
 Thermal Resistance and Pressure drop
 In order to minimize the heat transfer contribution to
Sgen, one must minimize the base stream temperature
difference (delta T) . In practical terms, however, to
minimize Delta T would imply the use of an infinitely
large fin and such a fin would be impractical and
thermodynamically undesirable, because an infinitely
large fin would have an infinite amount of Sgenf.
Contd…..
 Entropy generation number (Ns) that is defined as the
entropy generation divided by the fluid heat capacity
rate, which is considered the most common way of
non-dimensionalizing entropy generation. Its value
can range between 0 and infinity.

Heat transfer in freestanding microchannels with in-line and staggered pin fin structures with
clearance Reinhard Roth , Gabriel Lenk, Keith Cobry, Peter Woias

Research Done:
1. Clearance to diameter ratio.
2. In-line and staggered
configurations

1. With a clearance, the area of the side of the pin is smaller than it would be if the
pin were to span the entire channel.
2. the exposure of the pin tip area to the surrounding fluid is expected to result in a
high local heat transfer coefficient
3. Also the pressure drop for pin fin channels with clearance is expected to be lower
than in the no clearance case
Results
1. Heat transfer is strongly dependent on the clearance to diameter
(C/D) ratio. Smaller values of this ratio result in a strong increase of
the overall heat transfer as the amount of fluid bypassing under the
pin fins can be reduced.
2. Staggered show improved heat transfer.
3. A friction factor correlation is suggested for a staggered pin fin
arrangement, and takes the Reynolds number as only variable input
parameter.
4. At comparable clearance to diameter ratios and a Reynolds number
of 100, the Nusselt number of a staggered pin fin arrangement is
increased by 56% over the Nusselt number of the corresponding in-
line arrangement.
Effects of pin fin shape and configuration on the single-phase heat transfer characteristics of jet
impingement on micro pin fins Sidy Ndao , Yoav Peles, Michael K. Jensen

Research Done:
1. The cross flow effect
2. The best pin fin
Results
1. Negligible effect of cross flow
2. Area enhancement played a major role on the overall heat transfer
enhancement.
3. The circular pin fins along with the square pin fins displayed the
highest heat transfer coefficients for a given jet velocity.
4. Micro pin fins with the larger diameter outperformed the micro pin
fins with the smaller diameter.
5. The larger the diameter of the pin fin is, the smaller the flow area e.
Smaller flow area means higher local velocities within the pin fin
array for a given jet velocity and, hence, that should result in higher
average heat transfer coefficients.
An investigation of convective heat transfer in microchannel with Piranha Pin
Fin X. Yu a,⇑ , C. Woodcock a , J. Plawsky b , Y. Peles c

Research Done:
1. Convective heat transfer of ppfs
2. Comparison with plan micro-channel.
RESULTS
The friction factor decreased with Reynolds
number for both cases. However, the friction
factor for plain microchannel decreased more
rapidly than that for microchannel with PPFs
with increasing Reynolds number.

For the same Reynolds number, the microchannel

with PPFs had a higher Nusslet number than for
plain channel for Reynolds numbers larger than
147.5. Since the Nusselt number for PPFs is more
dependent on the Reynolds number (i.e., the
Reynolds number has a larger exponent in the
correlation) the enhancement increases with
Reynolds number. The increase is up to 86% for
Reynolds number of 2114.

characteristics of segmented finned

2. compare its performance with that of

Results
1. The structured surfaces show better heat transfer
performance compared to plane surface.
2. It has been observed that SF structured surface
shows a heat transfer improvement up to a factor of 3
times the heat transfer coefficient in plane surface

Heat transfer and pressure drop of a periodic expanded-constrained microchannels heat sink
Daxiang Deng a,b,⇑ , Liang Chen b , Xiaolong Chen b , Guang Pi b

Research Done:
1. convective heat transfer
and pressure drop
performance was explored
2. cooling efficiency was
compared with rectangular
microchannels
Results
1. PECM samples showed significant heat transfer enhancement, i.e.,
50% to 117%, compared to the rectangular counterpart in the test
ranges.
2. Such enhancement can be attributed to that the periodic expanded
constrained configurations of PECM induced periodic interruption
and redevelopment of thermal and hydraulic boundary layers, as
well as good flow separation, fluid acceleration and mixing.
3. heat transfer enhancement of PECM was not accompanied with the
expense of pressure drop penalty, and all the PECM samples reduced
the pressure drop for 10–74% compared to the rectangular
counterpart.
4. pressure drop and thermal resistance of PECM increased
monotonically with decreasing the microchannel gap widths

Results
The results reveal that overall pressure loss shows a slight improvement by using
the latticed pin fin when compared with a solid pin fin. However, only a cubic
body-centered-cubic pin fin has a positive influence on hydraulic and thermal
