Key Facts/Key Events
1. Aphrodite was extremely jealous of Psyche, a mere human girl, who
began to be praised more than the goddess of love herself. So, she
sent down her son, Eros, to curse Psyche. He had approached Psyche
in her sleep, ready to strike her with his bow when he cut himself. It
was when she opened her eyes Eros had fallen in love with the human
princess.

2. When Eros told his mother what had happened, she was outraged and
in a fit of anger, she cursed Psyche to never be loved. In protest, Eros
refused to shoot his arrows of love. This caused even more harm to
the goddess, who began to wither. She granted Eros permission to

3. Psyche’s parents were plagued with worry. Why would no one
marry their beautiful daughter? To seek their answer to this question,
they went to an oracle who said Psyche was not meant to marry a
mortal. Her parents were instructed to take her to a mountain and say
goodbye, which they did. From the mountain, the princess was
carried to Eros’ home by the West Wind, Zephyrus.

4. Eros and Psyche fall in love, but Eros is invisible to her. She
cannot see him because he did not think it was time yet. Soon
enough, Psyche begins to grow lonely, as Eros can only visit her
when the sun goes down. He allows her to see her sisters and that is
where the seeds of suspicious await to be sown. Amor and Psyche (Louis-Jean-François

5. Upon their visit, Psyche’s sisters begin planting
distrustful thoughts into her head. Overcome with
jealously, fear, and distrust, while Eros is sleeping, Psyche
looks at his true form. She drops oil on him, waking him
up, and Eros throws her out of the palace. Everything
grand she had in the previous moment was gone and
Psyche found herself in the woods, looking for Eros to
right the wrong she had done.

Meeting Myths
Psyche is expelled from Eros’ palace when she looks

at him without his permission. He had told her to

wait, but insecurity, distrust and jealously took ahold

of her. This suggests that the moral of the story is

that there can be no love when there is no trust.

Psyche did not trust Eros and easily believed her

sisters’ false words, which led her to betray his

wishes of waiting to see him. Eros and Psyche’s

relationship was put in jeopardy because there was

no confidence in one another.

Legacy
Trust in Love: Some say that Eros forgave
Psyche for her misdeeds and she, too, began
to aid in creating young love. Her duty was
to dispel distrust in relationships. If you’re
young and in love, you know who to thank!

Nature: Psyche was said to wander around

the forest looking for her husband and
seeking redemption. In one version of the
myth, Aphrodite turned her into an owl. In
another, Psyche was turned into a bat to
atone for her sins.
