Virtualization

Virtualization allows multiple simulated environments called virtual machines (VMs) to run on a single physical system through a hypervisor. This reduces costs and improves efficiency by allowing resources to be utilized more fully. Types of virtualization include server, desktop, application, memory, storage, and network virtualization. Major companies providing virtualization solutions are VMware and Citrix. VMware focuses on server and desktop virtualization while Citrix specializes in desktop virtualization. Both aim to improve flexibility, scalability and management of IT resources.

What is Virtualization?

Virtualization is the technology that allows to

create multiple simulated environments on a
single physical system.
How is it achieved?
A software called Hypervisor is connected to the
hardware which splits the system into multiple
environments called Virtual Machines (VMs).

The physical hardware equipped with a hypervisor is

called a host and the VMs which use its resources are
called guests.
Benefits of Virtualization
• Reduced cost –as a single hardware can be
used by multiple VMs
• Faster deployment of resources
• Fast error recovery
• Scalable
• Efficient IT operations
• Simplified data center management
Types of Virtualization
• Server Virtualization
• Desktop Virtualization
• Application Virtualization
• Memory Virtualization
• Storage Virtualization
• Network Virtualization
Server Virtualization
• Most common type of virtualization
• Made possible with the help of hypervisor
• All the hardware resources can be utilized
efficiently by stacking them together
• Increases computing speed and reliability of
servers.
Desktop Virtualization
• Desktop virtualization separates the desktop
environment from the physical device
• Allows multiple OS to be installed on a single
machine
• Able to access all their personal files and
applications on any PC
• It also lowers the cost of software licensing
and updates
• Maintenance is easy
Application Virtualization
• Applications are delivered from a server to a
end user’s device, such as laptops,
smartphones, and tablets etc.
• Instead of using an application at a specific
device and place, users will be able to gain
access to the application right from their device.
• Internet connection is required.
• This is particularly popular for businesses that
require the use of their applications on the go.
Storage Virtualization
• Array of servers that are managed by a virtual
storage system
• Manages storage from multiple sources
• Utilizes a single repository
• Storage virtualization software maintains
smooth operations & consistent performance.
Memory Virtualization
• Process of aggregating and pooling the complete
RAM resources into a single memory pool.
• It provides a greater memory capacity and the
disk drive also serves as an extension of the main
memory.
Network Virtualization
• Network virtualization can be categorized into two:
Internal – Provides a network to a single system.
External – Combines parts of networks into a
virtual unit
• Virtually pooling and managing the network resources
such as switches, routers, VLANs etc.
• E.g. Virtual Private Network (VPN) allows us to create a
virtual network over the internet without the use of
actual wires or physical hardware.
Case Studies
VMware & Citrix
VMware
• VM Ware is a company that provides software
solutions for different kinds of virtualization.
• Two key products: Desktop application and Server
applications
Desktop Applications
VMware desktop software is compatible with all major OS

Three different types:

• VMware Workstation: Used to install and run multiple copies

of same or different OS on a single machine
• VMware Fusion: For Mac users to provide extra compatibility
and support for various VMware products
• VMware Player: Freeware for users who do not have licensed
VMware products, intended for personal use
Server Virtualization
VMware's hypervisor for servers can run directly on the server
hardware without any need of primary OS

Some of VMware's server software are:

• VMware Server: Freeware that can be used over existing OS

like Windows, Linux
• VMware ESX Server: Enterprise level solution used to provide
better functionality than VMware Server. It is integrated with
VMware vCenter to improve manageability and consistency
• VMware ESXi Server: This is similar to VMware ESX Server
except that it requires very low disk space
Citrix
• Provides desktop, server, cloud and networking
virtualization software
• Best known for its Desktop Virtualization
• Recent advancements in Cloud
Desktop Virtualization
XenApp
• Provides features such as self storage, mobile touchscreen
optimization etc.
• It reduces transaction time by up to 300%.
• It mostly makes use of cloud computing.

XenDesktop
• Used to set up ultra modern networks that no longer
requires Ethernet cabling.
• It also allows various versions of an OS to be available to any
device, anywhere.
• It brings the power of multiple applications and utilities for
remote devices.
Differences
between
VMware and Citrix
Conclusion

The advantages of switching to a virtual

environment are plentiful, saving you money and
time while providing much greater business
continuity and ability to recover from disaster.
