Numeracy is defined as the ability to use mathematical skills and understanding to solve problems in everyday life. It involves applying math competencies to real-world contexts, communicating results, and critically evaluating mathematical statements. Numeracy encompasses quantitative literacy, essential math, and the ability to use math understanding and skills to solve problems. The numeracy skills framework consists of five focus areas: mental computation and numerical reasoning; patterns and algebraic reasoning; spatial visualization, geometric reasoning and mapping; measurement and time calculations; and graphical representation and data analysis.

ALIFIANA MARETA 190311867202 WHAT IS NUMERACY? Numeracy is a portmanteau of "numerical literacy ".
“Numeracy is the ability of a person to make
effective use of appropriate mathematical competencies for successful participation in everyday life, including personal life, at school, at work and in the wider community. It involves understanding real-life contexts, applying appropriate mathematical competencies, communicating the results of these to others, and critically evaluating mathematically based statements and results.” (Neil, W. Alex, 2014) Page 2 4 February 2020 “Numeracy : in practice the term may signify any one of a number of things including, basic computational arithmetic, essential mathematics, social mathematics, survival skills for everyday life, quantitative literacy, mathematical literacy and an aspect of mathematical power.” (John O’Donoghue, 2002)

“Numeracy encompasses the ability to use mathematical understanding and skills to solve problems and meet the demands of day-to-day living in complex social settings.” (PDST, 2016)
“Numeracy is the knowledge, skills, behaviours
and dispositions that students need in order to use mathematics in a wide range of situations.” (Department of Education and Training, 2017)

“Numeracy encompasses the knowledge, skills, behaviours and dispositions that students need to use mathematics in a wide range of situations. It involves students recognising and understanding the role of mathematics in the world and having the dispositions and capacities to use mathematical knowledge and skills purposefully.” (ACARA, 2017).

THE NUMERACY SKILLS FRAMEWORK CONSISTS OF FIVE FOCUS AREAS
Focus Area 1: Mental computation and numerical reasoning
A student identifies mathematical information, understands numbers, calculates, estimates
and solves problems.
Focus Area 2: Patterns and algebraic reasoning
A student identifies patterns, develops algebraic reasoning and makes generalisations.
Focus Area 3: Spatial visualisation, geometric reasoning and mapping
A student understands and applies concepts of 2D shapes and 3D objects, angles and position.
Focus Area 4: Measurement and time calculations
A student applies measurement strategies and understands time.
Focus Area 5: Graphical representation and data analysis
A student represents and interprets data in graphs, tables and diagrams.
