Math (Parts of Circle)

The document provides definitions and examples of different geometric terms related to circles such as radius, diameter, chord, secant, and tangent. It gives examples of naming the center, radii, chords, and other parts of circles. It also includes examples of using information given about radii or chords to calculate the length of the radius or diameter of a circle.

The Circle
Mang Tino tied his carabao to a mango tree.
When lightning and thunder struck,
the carabao ran frantically around
the tree, wanting to break free.
The rope could only allow the carabao
to stand 2 m from the tree.

a. What figure was formed by the carabao’s tracks?

b. In this figure, what do you call
i. the point where the tree stands?
ii. the line segment represented by the rope?
iii. the distance of the carabao to the mango
tree which is 2 m?
A circle is a set of all points in a
plane which are a given distance
r from a given point O in the
plane. The fixed point O is called
the center of the circle, and r is
the radius.

A circle is named after its center.

Name the following in the given figure at the right.
a. The Center A
b. The Circle
c. The radii (plural for radius)
O
Answer:
a. Point O
b. Circle O or O B
c. OA, OB, or 2m
Name the following: Q
a. the center
b. the circle P

c. a radius
Name the following:
Q
a. the center
b. the circle P
c. a radius

Answer:
a.Point P
b. Circle P
c.𝑃𝑄
A radius of a circle may be any of
the following:
1.A segment whose endpoint are the
center and a point on the circle.
2. The length of the segment referred
to in #1, or in other words, the
distance from the center to any
point on the circle.
A chord of a circle is a line
segment that has its endpoint
on the circle.

A diameter of a circle is a chord

that passes through the center
of the circle. Its length is twice
as long as a radius
Name the following in the given circle A.
a. Chord C
D
b. Diameter
c. The radii that make up
the diameter A
d. If the diameter is 12 cm,
how long is a radius?
E
Solution: B
a.DE or ED
b.BC or CB
c.AB or AC
d.r=6cm
A line segment or a ray that intersects a
circle at exactly one point is called a
tangent, and the intersection is called
the point of tangency.

A line, a segment, or a ray that intersects

a circle at exactly two points is called a
secant.

Every chord being a line segment

determines a secant, and every secant
being a line, contains a chord.
Name the following in the given circle D.
a.tangent c.chord
b.point of tangency d.secant B

D
SOLUTION:
a.Line1 A
b.Point A
C
c. BC
d. BC, or line m
Name the following in the given figure at the right.
a. The center P
b. The circle
c. 3 radii S
Q
d. A diameter
e. 2 chords V
R
f. A secant
g. A tangent
T
h. Point of tangency
U
i. 5 points on the circle
Name the following in the given figure at the
P
right.
a. The center = Point R S Q
b. The circle = Circle R
V
c. 3 radii = RQ, RS, RT R

d. A diameter = ST
e. 2 chords = VU, QT
T
f. A secant = VU
g. A tangent = PQ U
h. Point of tangency = Point Q
i. 5 points on the circle = Point S,Q,T,U and V
B and C are points on circle A. If AB=2x-3 and
AC=x+1,find the lengths of the radius and diameter.

Solution:
AB and AC are radii of A.Since all radii are equal,we
have B
AB = AC
2x-3=x +1
2x- x=3 +1 C
x=4 A

The radius AB=AC=x +1=4+1=5 units.

The diameter is 10 units.
Point A is the center of 2 concentric Circles.C is
the midpoint of AB and EA = 10 cm. Find each
length.

a.AB
b.BD
E A C B D
c.ED
d.AD
a.EA and AB are radii of the larger A. So,
AB=EA=10 cm.
b. C is the midpoint of AB. Thus,AC = BC= ½
AB= ½ (10)=5 cm. BC and BD are radii of B.
Therefore, BD=BC=5cm.
c. ED=EB + BD=2EA + BD=2(10) + 5=25 cm.
d. AD=AB +DB=10 + 5=15cm.
PQ=2x + 4 and PR=5x + 3. How long is the
circle’s radius? How long is its diameter?
P

R
PQ=2x + 4 and PR=5x + 3. How long is the
circle’s radius? How long is its diameter?
