Functions of Mission Computer
Functions of Mission Computer
•The Mission Computer (MC) is the main Central Computer that shall
perform Integrated Navigation and Attack task with the help of
various Systems in the DARIN-II System of NAVWASS Jaguar
Upgrade Programme.
The Mission Computer shall perform following main functions in the DARIN-II
System in association with the other Units of the System:
•In the normal (primary) navigation mode, INGPS provides the basic parameters
required for navigation.
•The Mission Computer based on the inputs from INGPS shall provide the
navigation guidance based on the Mission Planning Data.
• The Mission Computer shall store 9 Flight plans, 100 Waypoints, 100 Offsets and
50 Threats as a part of the Mission Data.
•The Mission Computer shall process the analog inputs in the form of Static and
Dynamic pressures and total outside temperature from the Air Data Package and
computes Air Speeds, Air Density Ratio, Mach number, Pressure Altitude and
Static Temperature.
Weapon Computations for Air to Air &
Air to Ground Attacks
Position Mark
The The Mission Computer shall carry out Mark Position procedure to store in the
MC memory, the co-ordinates Lat, Long and elevation of any over flown
ground position during normal navigation.
The stored position may then be used as a target or as a waypoint.
Basic Controls and Displays in the
DARIN-II System
Following main displays and controls are available in the cockpit for the Pilot
operation which are interfaced to the Mission Computer and managed by it
1. HUD:
Head-Up display is an electronic and optical device for the display of information in
the pilot's forward field of view. The HUD is capable of displaying of raster video
input together with stroke symbology and operating in the entire aircraft flight
envelope. It presents the required data during day and night. Total Field of view
(TFOV) is 28o circular. There are around thirty HUD pages, which are displayed to
the Pilot based on the mode of operation. These HUD pages include display related
to Navigation, Take-off, Landing, Navigation Update, Air to Air attacks using Guns
(CCIL) & Missiles, Air to Ground attacks using bombs, rockets and guns in CCIP,
CCRP attack modes. These pages are generated by the Mission Computern in stroke
symbology based on the mode for display on the HUD. Some of the pages are
reproduced below for reference. The controls for the operation of HUD such as On/
Off, brightness and contrast etc are provided on the UFCP, which is mounted on the
HUD front.

SMD
Smart Multifunctional Display unit is a Head Down Display and provide displays based on
the pilot selection. It has 23 Operation Selection Switches mounted on its front for selection of
system operations and entry of data in the system by the pilot. The display on the SMD are
provided from sources such as Digital Map Generator or Laser Designation Pod both in the form
of Video or generated by SMD itself.
Through SMD pilot can see different map formats generated by the DMG such as Aeronautical
Chart, Terrain Shading, Sun Angle Shading, Satellite photo Image and Perspective View. These
map images are superimposed with Navigation information corresponding to the Mission Planned
Data. Present Position is shown by the Aircraft symbol on the map. This aids the pilot to know
his present position on the map of the area in which he is flying and planned route. Information
related to Threats in the area along with their detection or lethality zones is also provided to avoid
these zones in the route. DMG also provides data sheets on the SMD for display. These data
sheets provide information for Pilot action. These data sheets can be selected by pilot or selected
automatically, whenever, any Warning Panel operates to attract Pilot intervention with the
corresponding data sheet for his actions.
Pilot can also select LDP images such as FLIR or CCD for display on the SMD for Navigation,
Update and Attacks.
SMD aids the pilot for entry of System operations related data such as Weapons configuration,
Aircraft parameters (total fuel, Bingo, Pressure altitude, temperature, GPW, R/W slope, AUW,
Drag Index, Engine type, Co-ordinates system selection etc.), INGPS Harmonization, Wing Span
data, Mission Planning (FPL, WP/OFS & THRT), LDP controls and IFF controls.
There are around 48 different Formats/ Sub-Formats on the SMD for display, selectable by the
Pilot, under the operation of OSSs. Some of the display Formats are reproduced below for

3.Up Front Control Panel is a display and control unit.
•It is mounted on the HUD front and has 5x24 LCD matrix display and
push buttons switches for system mode selection and entry.
•UFCP also has switches for the control of HUD operation such as
brightness, contrast controls etc. There are around 72 pages for display
on UFCP. The display of these pages is either automatic based on mode
of system operation or selectable by the pilot for view/ entry of data
using switches on the panel. The UFCP layout and some of the pages are
reproduced below for reference.

Hand Controller has switches and slew controls mounted on it. With the operation of
switches pilot changes the phase of operation, accept/ cancel the operation. Using
slew controls pilot perform fine-tuning of the system during attack and Nav update
modes.
