Louis Daguerre from France

Louis Daguerre was a painter for the

French opera. But he wanted to make a

new type of picture. He started his

experiments in the 1820s

Mary Anderson often visited New York City

by car. In winter she noticed that when it

rained or snowed, driver got out of their car

all the time to clean their windows.

Kirkpatrick Macmillan from Scotland

Long ago in 1540,


1490 Leonardo da Vinci drew

a design for the modern bicycle. But the

first person to make a bicycle was

Kirkpatrick Macmillan in 1839

He lived in Scotland, so people didn’t hear

about his invention for a long time. Twenty

years later, another bike came from

France. In 1895
1825 the bike became cheap

and everyone could have one. Now people,

especially women, could travel to the next

town. It help them find someone to marry.

Exercise 1: Read the text about Alexander
Graham Bell. Put the verbs into the past simple.
Alexander Graham Bell (1) was born in Edinburgh,
Scotland. His mother (2) was deaf, so all his life he
(3) wanted to help his mother hear and speak.
Alexander was very clever. He (4) could read and
write when he was very young, and he (5) finished
school when he was 14. At 14 he also (6) invented a
speaking machine with his brother. He (7) studied
other inventions, too. One day he (8) made a mistake,
because (9) couldn’t read German very well.
But this mistake (10) helped him to invent telephone
later.

USA to teach deaf children to speak. He
