Steps IV Therapy

 Infusion Machine
 Infusion Set (for manual or compatible with
IV Inf. Machine)
 IV Fluid
 IV Cannula
 IV Tray
Materials
 Clean/ Sterile Gloves
 Site & Bottle Label
 Splint (as necessary)
 Alcohol Swab/ Cotton Balls (Soaked in
70% Alcohol)
 Sterile Gauze (1X1 or 2X2)
 OpSite Dressing
 Permanent Marker Pen (Small Tipped)
Steps  Patient’s ID Sticker
 IV Fluid Bottle Stand
 Tourniquet
 Adhesive Plaster/ Micropore
 Check for prescription or doctor’s
order for IVF Therapy (with Clinical
Instructor) and prepare needed
materials.
 Go to bedside of the patient, check
Steps patient’s identity, and explain the
procedure. If there are significant
others, procedure must also be
explained clearly according to their
level of understanding.
Perform medical
handwashing before and
after the procedure.
Choose carefully the site of
insertion
 Apply tourniquet at about 5cm – 12cm
(2in. – 6in.) above the insertion site.
(Considerations has to be made
regarding age and pathological
conditions of the patient).

Steps  Disinfect the site of insertion (if


betadine tipped prep swab is used
decolorize it with 70% isopropyl
alcohol or in accordance with infection
prevention and control protocol of the
hospital). Allow 15-30 seconds to dry.
 Depending upon the size of the vein, use an
appropriate and well proportioned caliber or bore
of cannula. Proceed with the insertion of the
cannula in accordance with the technique and
skills needed (beginning with a 15º to 30º
depending upon the selected site and size of vein,
and continuing on with reduction of approach
angle and simultaneously retracting the needle

 Initial adhesive tape has to be applied to maintain
a secured position of cannula.
 Maintain the tourniquet in place if
collection of blood specimen is needed
(follow procedure when collecting
blood samples).
 Slip a sterile and dry gauze
underneath the connection point of the

extraction of stylet/ needle.
 Release the tourniquet, apply pressure
at about an inch above the length of the
cannula that is directly perpendicular
to the vein.
 Flush the cannula with a prepared
syringed as per hospital protocol or
connect the primed infusion tube or
connectors.
 Regulate the flow according to
physician’s order.

Steps  Reassure the patient.


 Finally anchor the cannula using the
prescribed adhesive tapes.
 Proper positioning and anchor of
proximal tubes or multiple connectors
has to be performed.
 Label the site and Fluid Bag/
Bottle according to hospital
protocol.
Steps  Record completed or failed
procedure in the patient’s file or
Hospital Informatic System.
