Presentation 1

The document discusses trigonometric functions and identities. It defines the basic trig functions of sine, cosine, and tangent as ratios of the sides of a right triangle. It then introduces the reciprocal trig functions of cosecant, secant, and cotangent. It also discusses trigonometric identities, such as tangent being equal to sine divided by cosine. Finally, it discusses using a calculator to find values of trig functions and their reciprocals.

Trigonometric

Function
What are the 3 basic trigonometric
functions?
 The three main functions in trigonometry are Sine, Cosine and
Tangent.
Sine Function:
sin(θ) = Opposite / Hypotenuse
Cosine Function:
cos(θ) = Adjacent / Hypotenuse
Tangent Function:
tan(θ) = Opposite / Adjacent
For a given angle θ each ratio stays the same
no matter how big or small the triangle is
 When we divide Sine by Cosine we get:

 sin(θ)cos(θ) = Opposite/HypotenuseAdjacent/Hypotenuse = OppositeAdjacent =

tan(θ)

 So we can say:

 tan(θ) = sin(θ)cos(θ)

 That is our first Trigonometric Identity.

 We can also divide "the other way around" (such as
Adjacent/Opposite instead of Opposite/Adjacent):

 triangle showing Opposite, Adjacent and Hypotenuse

 Cosecant Function:
 csc(θ) = Hypotenuse / Opposite
 Secant Function:
 sec(θ) = Hypotenuse / Adjacent
 Cotangent Function:
 cot(θ) = Adjacent / Opposite
What are the 3 reciprocal identities?

THERE ARE THREE RECIPROCAL TRIGONOMETRIC FUNCTIONS, MAKING A TOTAL OF SIX INCLUDING
COSINE, SINE, AND TANGENT. THE RECIPROCAL COSINE FUNCTION IS SECANT:
SEC(THETA)=1/COS(THETA). THE RECIPROCAL SINE FUNCTION IS COSECANT,
CSC(THETA)=1/SIN(THETA). THE RECIPROCAL TANGENT FUNCTION IS COTANGENT, EXPRESSED TWO
WAYS: COT(THETA)=1/TAN(THETA) OR COT(THETA)=COS(THETA)/SIN(THETA).
What are quadrantal angles?
 Angles in the standard position where the terminal side lies on the x or y axis. For example:
90°, 180
 0° etc. Angle is quadrantal -180=-2 . 90
degree
 Example

A quadrantal angle is one that is in the standard

position and has a measure that is a multiple of 90° (or
π/2 radians). A quadrantal angle will have its terminal lying
along an x or y axis.
How to find trigonometric functions in
quadrantal angles? (45,45,90),(36,60,90),etc.
How to use a calculator to find values of Trig
Find the value of x for the following triangle. (Give
Functions. your answer correct to 4 decimal places)
Example:
Find the value of cos 6.35˚.
Solution:
Press

cos 6.35˚ = 0.9939 (correct to 4 decimal places)

Solution:

Example:
Find the value of sin 40˚ 32 ’ . x = 6.21 × sin 31.3˚ = 3.2262
Solution:
Press

sin 40˚32 ’ = 0.6499 (correct to 4 decimal places)
