Function
What are the 3 basic trigonometric
functions?
The three main functions in trigonometry are Sine, Cosine and
Tangent.
Sine Function:
sin(θ) = Opposite / Hypotenuse
Cosine Function:
cos(θ) = Adjacent / Hypotenuse
Tangent Function:
tan(θ) = Opposite / Adjacent
For a given angle θ each ratio stays the same
no matter how big or small the triangle is
When we divide Sine by Cosine we get:
So we can say:
tan(θ) = sin(θ)cos(θ)
THERE ARE THREE RECIPROCAL TRIGONOMETRIC FUNCTIONS, MAKING A TOTAL OF SIX INCLUDING
COSINE, SINE, AND TANGENT. THE RECIPROCAL COSINE FUNCTION IS SECANT:
SEC(THETA)=1/COS(THETA). THE RECIPROCAL SINE FUNCTION IS COSECANT,
CSC(THETA)=1/SIN(THETA). THE RECIPROCAL TANGENT FUNCTION IS COTANGENT, EXPRESSED TWO
WAYS: COT(THETA)=1/TAN(THETA) OR COT(THETA)=COS(THETA)/SIN(THETA).
What are quadrantal angles?
Angles in the standard position where the terminal side lies on the x or y axis. For example:
90°, 180
0° etc. Angle is quadrantal -180=-2 . 90
degree
Example
Example:
Find the value of sin 40˚ 32 ’ . x = 6.21 × sin 31.3˚ = 3.2262
