DEMO

This document discusses motion in one dimension and defines key terms like distance, displacement, speed, and velocity. It includes activities where students measure the distance and displacement of paths around a school. Students learn that distance is the total length traveled and displacement is the straight line distance between the start and end point. The document emphasizes that displacement involves both magnitude and direction, making it a vector quantity.

Motion In One Dimension

Distance and Displacement

A. Describe the motion of an object in
terms of distance or displacement
B. Differentiate distance and
Objectives displacement in terms of magnitude
and direction;
C. Calculate the distance and
displacement of a moving object.
ACTIVITY 1
FIND YOUR
PARTNER
1. In which situation did the volunteer
find the object easily? Why?
2. How important is it to use directional
guide?

3. What did you include in the
QUESTIONS instructions so that it can easily be
understood/followed?
4. How is point of reference important
in describing moving objects?
Group 1 : Room to Library

YOUR Office
ROAD Group 4 : Room to School MRF
 A. Draw your path from the room to
designated area in the school.
 B. Label your roadmap including the
names of the buildings, etc. you’ll pass by.
ACTIVITY 2:  C. Estimate the length of path in every
building you will pass by.
YOUR  D. Use the scale 1cm = 1m.
ROAD  E. Draw a straight line from your starting
point to your end point. Measure it as
well.
 F. Answer Guide Questions
1. What is the total length of
the path you travelled from
your room to your designated
PROCESSING area?
2. What is the displacement
from your room to your
designated area?
3. What is the difference between
distance and displacement?
Distance is the total length of path
PROCESSING travelled by a moving object.
Displacement is the shortest
distance from the initial to the final
position.
4. How will you determine the total
distance travelled and displacement of
a moving object?
For distance, simply add all the
distances travelled by the object while
for displacement measure the straight
PROCESSING line distance from the starting to the
end point.
 Displacement computation.
 a. Same direction – ADD
 b. Opposite direction – SUBTRACT
DISTANCE IS A SCALAR QUANTITY
THAT’S WHY IT IS ONLY
REPRESENTED BY THE MAGNITUDE
WHILE DISPLACEMENT IS A VECTOR
QUANTITY SO IT ALWAYS INVOLVES
THE MAGNITUDE AND THE

EXAMPLE:
TOTAL DISTANCE TRAVELLED: 15 Km
DISPLACEMENT: 15Km, North
