WHAT IS AS 9100 ?

• AS9100 is a widely adopted standardised Quality Management System(QMS)

for aerospace industry.
• It was released in October 1999, by Society Of Automotive Engineers and
European Association of Aerospace industries.
• It replaces the earlier AS9000 and fully incorporates current version of
ISO9000 standards i.e. IS09001:2015(current revision of AS9100), while
adding additional requirements relating to quality and safety.
WHY AS9100?
LIST OF VERSIONS OF AEROSPACE
STANDARDS
• AS9000(1997) : Based on ISO9001:1994 standards and complementary
quality documentation requirements incorporated in a unified document.
• AS9100(1999): It added 55 aerospace industry specific amplifications and
requirements to ISO9001:1994.
• AS9100 REVISION A(2001): Based on revised QUALITY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
model in an updated ISO9001:2000.
• AS9100 REVISION B(2004): An administrative revision to reduce a few
clauses of REV.A.

• AS9100 REVISION C(2009): This standard includes ISO9001:2008 QMS requirements and
further requirement was basically introduced to ensure there were sufficient processes in
place to assure effectiveness of documented controls.

Main Theme of revision C :

• Risk Management through introduction of “special requirements” and “critical items”.
These are measured through Requirements Conformance and delivery performance which
can be enhanced by: 1. Adopting Proven Product Development Processes.
2. Eliminating “Recurring Corrective Actions”.
WHAT IS A RISK ?

RISK AS DEFINED IN ISO 31000 IS :

“ THE EFFECT OF UNCERTAINITY ON OBJECTIVES “

CURRENT VERSION OF AS9100

• AS9100 REVISION D(2016):This update from revision C to D

includes full text of ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System
(QMS) and further added requirements as compared to prior
revisions which will be discussed further.
• All Defence and Aerospace manufacturers and service providers
require AS9100D certification latest by September 2018 as a
condition of doing business.

MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (QMS)

OR DICREPENT PART CANT BE PRODUCED BY ANYONE ELSE EXCEPT
OEMS(ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT MANUFACTURERS)
3. RISK CLAUSE MERGED WITH NEW ISO 9001:2015 RISK REQUIREMENTS
ALONG WITH INCREASED EMPHASIS ON RISK IN OPERATIONAL PROCESSES.
4. AWARENESS CLAUSE ADDED FOR AWARENESS OF INDIVIDUAL
CONTRIBUTION TO PRODUCT AND SERVICE QUALITY AND SAFETY ALONG
WITH ETHICAL BEHAVIOUR.
