Research Proposal

This research proposal aims to determine the factors that affect Grade 12 STEM students' decisions in choosing academic strands and tracks at the University of San Carlos to minimize chances of academic setbacks. The study will survey 10 Grade 12 STEM students through questionnaires, interviews, and a focus group discussion. The findings could help students, parents, teachers, and administrators in facilitating more informed academic choices. The theoretical frameworks of Social Cognitive Career Theory, Developmental Self-Concept Theory, Holland's Theory of Vocational Personalities, and Rational Choice Theory will guide the study.

13
THEORETICAL
FRAMEWORK
SOCIAL COGNITIVE THEORY

◉ According to Lent, Brown, and Hackett (2002),

SCCT aims to explain how individuals’ career
interests develop, how they make career choices,
and how they determine their level of performance.

14
THEORETICAL
FRAMEWORK
SUPER’S DSCT THEORY
◉ Development Self-Concept Theory explains how self-
concept affects an individual’s academic choice and
career choice.
◉ As the self-concept becomes more realistic and stable,
so does vocational choice and behavior.

15
THEORETICAL
FRAMEWORK
HOLLAND’S THEORY OF VOCATIONAL
◉PERSONALITIES
This theory helps students choose the majors
that interest them.
◉ These vocational interests could be conceptualized into
six typologies, which are Realistic (R), Investigative (I), Artistic
(A), Social (S), Enterprising (E), and Conventional (C).

16
THEORETICAL
FRAMEWORK
RATIONAL CHOICE
◉THEORY
This theory states that individuals rely on
rational calculations to make rational choices that
result in outcomes aligned with their own
best interests.

3 METHODOLOGY

18
RESEARCH
ENVIRONMENT
 The location of the study will be
conducted in University of San Carlos, Talamban
Campus, located in Nasipit, Talamban, Cebu City,
Philippines.

 USC Talamban Campus has 80 hectares with

wide area for expansion and development of
university physical facilities.

 USC has about 22,000 students (otherwise called

Carolinians). 19
RESEARCH PARTICIPANTS
The research respondents are Grade 12 (STEM)
students from the University of San Carlos –
Talamban Campus in Cebu City. The total
respondents that the researchers are about to
interview are ten (10), which is the maximum
number needed for the conducted research.

20
RESEARCH INSTRUMENTS

◉ A researcher-made questionnaire will be used as

a survey tool and guide in interviews.

◉ Researchers would conduct in-depth interviews, to explore

the perspectives of the small number of respondents
in accordance to the study.

◉ The researchers also intend to conduct Focus

Group Discussion (FGD) with the 10 selected participants.
