Presentation Capacitor Start Motor (Group 4)

This document summarizes the capacitor start motor. It discusses that a capacitor start motor uses a capacitor connected in series with the auxiliary winding to produce a phase difference between the main and auxiliary currents. This allows the motor to operate as a two-phase motor for starting. It then describes the different types of capacitor start motors and discusses the construction, phasor diagram, torque-speed characteristics, and applications of the capacitor start motor. The key applications mentioned are for loads with higher inertia like pumps, compressors, refrigerators, and air conditioners.

INTRODUCTION:

• A capacitor start motor are a single phase induction motor

that employs a capacitor in the auxiliary winding circuit.
• As employs of capacitor, produce a greater phase difference
between the current in the main and the auxiliary windings.
• The name capacitor stars itself shows that the motor uses a
capacitor for the purpose of the starting.
• The motor acts as a balanced two phase motor.
• As the motor reaches the rated speed, auxiliary winding and
starting capacitor disconnected automatically by centrifugal
switch.
TYPES:
Different types of capacitor start motor are designed
for various field-
• Single voltage, externally reversible type
• Single voltage, non reversible type
• Single voltage, reversible with thermostat type
• Single voltage, non reversible with magnetic switch type
• Two voltage, non reversible type
• Two voltage, reversible type
• Single voltage, three lead reversible type
• Single voltage, instantly reversible type
• Two speed type
• Two speed with two capacitor type
CONSTRUCTION:

• The capacitor start motor has a cage rotor and has

two winding on the stator.
• Stator windings are known as the main winding and
the auxiliary or stator winding.
• The two windings are placed 90 degree apart.
• Capacitor Cs is connected in series with the starting
winding.
• Centrifugal switch Sc is also connected in the circuit.
PHASOR DIAGRAM:
• Im is the current in the main winding.
• Ia is the auxiliary current.
• Im leg the voltage by an angle as consisting inductance.
• Ia lead the voltage with some angle as presence of
capacitor.
• Thus single phase supply current is split into two phases.
• The two windings are displaced apart by 90 degree
electrical.
• Their MMF is equal in magnitute but 90 degrees apart in
time phase.
TORQUE-SPEED CHARACTERISTICS:
CHARACTERISTICS:

• The characteristics shows, starting current is high.

The starting torque is directly proportional to sine of
angle between starting current and main current. i.e. θ
T α sinθ
• The cost of this motor is more as compared to split
phase motor because of additional cost of the
capacitor.
• To reverse the motor, first bringing it to rest condition,
then reversing the connection of one winding.
• Speed is constant within 5% slip.
• It has higher starting torque of about 3 to 4.5 times
of the full load torque.
• To obtain high starting torque, two conditions are
essential. They are-
(A)The starting capacitor value must be large.
(B) The value of starting winding resistance must
be low.
APPLICATION:

• Used for the loads of higher inertia where

frequent starting is required.
• Used in pump and compressor.
• Used in refrigerator and air conditioner
compressor.
• Used for conveyors and machine tools.
