What is writing skills?

 A form of communication which allow writers to


put their owns feelings and ideas on paper, to
organize their knowledge and belief into
convincing arguments, and to convey meaning
through well-constructed text.
Thesis statement

 One sentence that expresses the main idea of


an essay.
 Generally, a thesis statement can be the last
sentence of the first paragraph.
 Example:
There are several ways for college students to
improve their study habits.

The thesis statement above shows 2 things:


a) The essay is about study habits of college
students.
b) The rest of the essay is showing about the ways to
improve study habits.
Writing Topic Sentence

 A topic sentence shows only about what the


paragraph is attached to is about.
 A sentence that expresses the main idea of
the paragraph
Importances of Topic
Sentence

 Support an essay’s thesis statement


 Unify content of a paragraph and directs the
order of the sentence
 Advises readers to discuss or know what is
the content or information of the paragraph
 Can determine the subject and perspective of
the paragraph

Supporting Sentences

 The sentences within a paragraph that support


the topic sentence.
 This supporting sentences include examples,
details, explanation and more.
 A topic sentence will focus the paragraph and
introduce the controlling idea; supporting
sentences discuss the topic sentence.
Writing Paragraph

 A paragraph develops one main idea through


a series of related sentences
 Paragraph always playing important role in
writing because they provide a framework for
organising ideas in a logical order.
Paragraph Structure
 Made up three-part structure:
introduction, body and conclusion
a) Introduction: first section of a paragraph
include the topic sentence
b) Body: follows the introduction
discusses the controlling idea by using
examples, arguments, facts and other
information
c) Conclusion: final section
summarizes the connections between
information discussed in the body of the
paragraph and the paragraph’s controlling idea
Coherence Paragraph
 Each sentence relates clearly to the topic sentence
or controlling idea
 A coherence paragraph can ensure each sentence
flows smoothly into the next without obvious
jumps.
 Coherence writing is known as the logical bridge
between words, sentences, and paragraphs.
Cohesive Devices

 Cohesive devices sometimes known as linking


words, linkers, and connectors.
 The cohesive devices are one of the most
misunderstood and misused parts in writing.
 ‘For example’, ‘However’, ‘Morever’
(5) TEXT TYPES :

 Narrative
 Descriptive
 Argumentative
 Persuasive
 Expository

1. NARRATIVE

 Narration is the telling of a story

 A narrative essay is a type of essay that has a


single motif or a central point

 All incidents, happenings, and characters revolve


around a single motif presented in the narrative

 It also similar to a simple five-paragraph essay


and has the same format.

What is the Purpose ?

 To gain and hold readers


 To teach or inform (important of experience)
 To change attitudes / social opinions

• Characters with defined personalities /


identities
• Dialogue often included
• Descriptive language to create images
in the reader’s mind and enhance the
story

NARRATIVE TEXTS :
• Plot (What is going to happen)
• Setting (Where / When ) – take place
• Characterization (Who)
• Structure (How will the story begin)
• Theme (What Message the writer is attempting to communicate)

2. DESCRIPTIVE
 A descriptive essay is a short paper which is all
about describing or summarizing a topic.
 It is a form of essay that describes something,
bringing it to life for the reader.
 Description is used in all forms of writing to create a
vivid impression of a person ,place , object or event .

PURPOSE
• Describe a special place and explain why it is special
• Describe the most important person in your life
• To create a particular mood , atmosphere or a place

3. ARGUEMENTATIVE
 Definition is – given to argument : tending to
argue : having or showing a tendency to disagree
or argue with other people in an angry way.
 Consisting of or characterized by argument.

PURPOSE
• Logical and persuasive (argue out an issue more logical)
• Critical Thinking (make student understand both the
potential weaknesses and strengths of their position in an
issue)
• Research Skills
• Evidence for Claim

4. PERSUASIVE
 Persuasive definition is – tending to persuade
 Persuasive essay : text written with the intent to
persuade or convince the reader of something.
 A well-written persuasive essay is based on sound
reasoning, detailed and relevant evidence, and a
through consideration of alternatives.

Purpose
• To persuade readers to adopt the writer’s point of
view on an issue / or agree with a suggested course
of action

5. EXPOSITORY
 Expository definition – of , relating to , or containing
exposition
 Expository text is non-fiction or informational text.
 Expository writing is a mode of writing in which the
purpose of the author is to inform, explain, describe, or
define his or her subject to the reader
PURPOSE
• Growth in the ability of analyse expository texts.
• Identifying main idea and supporting details
• To provide facts in a way that is educational and
purposeful
• Explain a topic in a logical and straightforward manner.
