The Circulatory System

The circulatory system circulates blood throughout the body via the heart, blood vessels, and blood. The heart pumps oxygen-rich blood to tissues via arteries and receives deoxygenated blood back via veins. Capillaries distribute blood to tissues and collect it for return. Blood carries oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and waste. Illnesses like hypertension, arteriosclerosis, and congenital heart defects can damage the circulatory system if not prevented by a healthy lifestyle. The circulatory, respiratory, and digestive systems work together, with the circulatory system transporting oxygen, food, and waste throughout the body.

Blood vessels
(arteries, veins,
capillaries)
Its Function:

Blood vessels are tubes

that carry blood to all
parts of our body.
Some blood vessels carry
blood from our heart to all
parts of our body. Other
blood vessels carry blood
from other parts of our
body back to our heart.

• Capillaries

Capillaries are the

smallest of blood
vessels. They serve to
distribute oxygenated
blood from arteries to
the tissues of the body
and to feed
deoxygenated blood
from the tissues back
into the veins.

Blood
The components of human blood:

• Plasma: carries nutrients,

hormones, and proteins
throughout the body cells.
• White blood cell: help fight
infections by attacking bacteria,
viruses, and germs that invade
the body.
• Platelets (thrombocytes): help
us stop bleeding if we get a cut
• Red blood cell: carries oxygen
throughout the body cells
Blood

Function:

Our blood carries oxygen, disgested food and water to all parts of our
body. It also carries carbon dioxide and other waste substances that are
produced by our cells away from different parts of our body. The waste
substances are then released from the body.

Journey of Blood in our Body
Our Circulary system circulates blood in two parts:
• From the heart to all parts of our body
Our heart pumps the blood rich in oxygen to all the cells in our body. our
blood also transports digested food and water from our digestive system to all
the cells of our body. our cells use the oxygen and digested food to produce
the energy needed to carry out their functions.

• From all parts of our body back to our heart

as blood goes around our body, it pics up carbon dioxide and waste substances
produced by our cells. on its way back to our heart , blood passes on waste
substances to some organs. these waste substances are eventually passed out
from our body. when blood reaches our heart again, it is sent to the lungs
where carbon dioxide is removed and oxygen is taken in

• Arteriosclerosis

• Damage in the heart or blood vessels (congenital heart)

• Anaemia

• leukaemia
Illnesses Related to our Circulatory System
• Hypertension
Hypertension or high blood pressure, can lead to
other medical conditions
Examples: arteriosclerosis, heart attack, stroke,
and kidney failure
Caused by smoking, a diet high in fat or salt,
overweight, lack of exercise, high stress level.

• Arteriosclerosis
(penyempitan pembuluh
darah)
Atherosclerosis is a disease in which
the inside of an artery narrows due
to the build up of plaque.
Blood flow becomes restricted and
blood clots may develop in the
blood vessels. such clots may lead
to a heart attack or a stroke.

How do we prevent
arteriosclerosis?
- Avoid foods containing trans and
saturated fats.
- Minimize consume salt and
sweeteners.
- Choose plant-based foods:
vegetables, beans, whole grains,
and fruit.
Illnesses Related to our Circulatory System
• Congenital heart
Destroy the heart valves that
control the direction of blood
flow through the heart.

Some children suffer from

congenital heart disorders and
surgery is needed to correct
such disorders
Illnesses Related to our Circulatory System
• Anaemia How do we prevent
anaemia?
Anemia is a disease of the blood.
- Eat plenty of iron-rich
This disease occurs when the amount of red foods, such as tofu: green
blood cells in our body is low.
and leafy vegetables, lean
Since red blood cells carry oxygen, there will be red meat, beans and irons
lack of oxygen carried to the cells in our body fortified cereals and breads
- Avoid drinking tea or coffee
Anaemia caused by a lack of iron in our diet or with your meals, as they
large amounts of blood loss can affect iron absorption.
- Get enough vitamin B12
and folic acid
Illnesses Related to our Circulatory System

• Leukaemia
A more serious disease of the blood cause
it is also known as cancer of the blood or
bone marrow.

Caused by when white blood cells

multiply abnormally in the bone marrow.
Keeping our circulatory system
healthy
• Exercise regularly
• Not smoke
• Not consume alcohol or take drugs
• Have balance diet
• Drink a lot of water.
• Go for annual body checkup
