GRINO Intellectual Property.

Mariano Grino is a 62-year-old inventor from the Philippines who created an "Unsinkable Rescue Boat" made of lightweight and durable materials like polystyrene and marine epoxy composite that can withstand damage and remain afloat even with punctures. Inspired by a typhoon that caused flooding, his rescue boat can carry 12 people, float in shallow water, and is repairable for continued use in disasters at a lower cost than inflatable boats. Though few showed initial interest, his innovation aimed to improve water rescue operations and save lives during emergencies.

PROPERTY
Mariano Griño
◦62 years old
◦From Gran Plains Subdivision in Jaro District but now residing in
the United State of America
◦Bachelor of Arts degree at University of the Philippines Diliman
◦Masters Degree on Urban and Regional Planning
◦Former division chief of National Economic and Development
Authority in Western Visayas
◦A reservist of the Regional Community Defense Center
◦He invented the “Unsinkable Rescue Boat”
Brief Background of Grino
◦ He was always interested in fixing and inventing things.
“I have always liked to work with my hands” said Grino in an interview.
◦ He already knows how to operate a wielding machine when he was in high school. During
that time, he made his first invention.
◦ He designed and assembled a double-ended mechanical can opener made from scrapped
materials that was used to quickly open cans where cacao seedling where planted. The can
opener was for an uncle’s plantation in Negros.
◦ He also designed a brick making machine that made the production faster and produce
durable brick.
◦ Aside from reading and researching on his concepts, he also took special courses in trade
schools including a workshop on ceramics and course on machine shop.
◦ He spends most of his free time at his backyard, trying out things and testing materials and
using his own money to invest in buying materials for his project.
Reasons Behind The Invention
◦ For years, Grino toyed with the idea of building an unsinkable rescue boat that
could continue floating even if damaged.
◦ But the plan remained in the drawing board before the Typhoon Frank triggered
massive flooding in Iloilo City and neighboring towns.
◦ While Grino’s residence in Gran Plain Subdivision in Jaro District was spared, his
family had to lend their inflatable rubber boat to rescue trapped resident in
neighboring subdivisions. The boat was, however, damaged.
◦ He thought that a rescue boat should be made more sturdy and should withstand
collisions and damages during rescue operations.
◦ Grino shared the concept with antique Gov. Salvacion Zaldivar-Perez, a family
friend, who encouraged him to proceed with the project.
“Unsinkable Rescue Boat”
◦ Measuring 14 feet long, six feet wide and three feet high, the boat is made from
lightweight polystyrene (Styrofoam) insulated in marine epoxy composite. Its
frame is made is made of plywood and its skid plate has aluminum to protect it
from hard and pointed objects when it maneuvers on submerged rooftops or
fences.
◦ The boat can float in seven to eight inches of water and can accommodate 12
people. It will remain afloat even if the body is punctured by sharp objects, such as
broken glass, and can be repaired in a few hours.
◦ Grino’s boat, which includes a 40-horsepower engine, cost around Php600,000,
relatively cheaper than most inflatable rubber boat.
◦ It is also provided with a a trailer for easy transfer to disaster areas, and equipped
with four paddles, a grappling hook or anchor to maintain stability while picking
up victims, and a life saver.
◦ He also designed a life vest made of styro foam and ballistic nylon, which costs
around Php350 or cheaper than commercially sold life jackets.
Continuation…
◦ People barely showed interest in acquiring his work. Grino could not produc
another unsinkable rescue boat after Agusan provincial government bought his
prototype.
◦ Grino’s latest invention is lifebuoy, a ring shaped life preserver, made of
Styrofoam and fiberglass cloth that can accommodate up to four adults.
◦ In the US, he is researching ways to develop renewable sources of energy like
solar and hydropower.
◦ His ultimate dream is to build an amphibious vehicle
