Motorsports and Race Track

Motor racing began in the late 19th century in Europe and the United States. Early races took place on public roads before purpose-built racetracks emerged. Various types of motorsports split into separate racing categories using different vehicle types. The earliest racetracks were modified horse racing courses, while modern tracks prioritize spectator safety. In India, the first recorded motorsport event was in Chennai, and the Madras Motor Race Track was the first recognized racetrack. Narain Karthikeyan became India's first Formula One driver in 2005.

HISTORY OF MOTOR SPORTS

• IN 1894, A FRENCH NEWSPAPER ORGANISED A RACE FROM PARIS TO ROUEN


 AND BACK, STARTING CITY TO CITY RACING. IN 1900, THE 
GORDON BENNETT CUP WAS ESTABLISHED.
• CLOSED CIRCUIT RACING AROSE AS OPEN ROAD RACING, ON PUBLIC ROADS,
WAS BANNED. BROOKLANDS WAS THE FIRST DEDICATED MOTOR RACING
TRACK IN THE UNITED KINGDOM.
• FOLLOWING WORLD WAR I, EUROPEAN COUNTRIES ORGANISED 
GRAND PRIX RACES OVER CLOSED COURSES.
• IN THE UNITED STATES, DIRT TRACK RACING BECAME POPULAR. AFTER 
WORLD WAR II, THE GRAND PRIX CIRCUIT BECAME MORE FORMALLY
ORGANISED.
• IN THE UNITED STATES, STOCK CAR RACING AND DRAG RACING BECAME FIRMLY
ESTABLISHED. MOTORSPORTS ULTIMATELY BECAME DIVIDED BY TYPES OF 
MOTOR VEHICLES INTO RACING EVENTS, AND THEIR APPROPRIATE
ORGANISATIONS.
HISTORY OF RACE TRACK
• THERE IS SOME EVIDENCE OF RACETRACKS BEING DEVELOPED IN SEVERAL ANCIENT
CIVILIZATIONS. THE MOST DEVELOPED ANCIENT RACETRACKS WERE THE 
HIPPODROMES OF THE ANCIENT GREEKS AND THE CIRCUSES OF THE 
ROMAN EMPIRE. BOTH OF THESE STRUCTURES WERE DESIGNED FOR HORSE AND 
CHARIOT RACING.
• THE STADIUM OF THE CIRCUS MAXIMUS IN ANCIENT ROME COULD HOLD 200,000
SPECTATORS.RACING FACILITIES EXISTED DURING THE MIDDLE AGES, AND THERE
ARE RECORDS OF A PUBLIC RACECOURSE BEING OPENED AT NEWMARKET IN
LONDON IN 1174. IN THE UNITED STATES, THE RACE TRACKS ARE DIRT.
• MOTORCYCLES RACING ON A HIGHLY BANKED BOARD TRACK IN 1911 WITH THE
ADVENT OF THE AUTOMOBILE IN THE LATE NINETEENTH/EARLY TWENTIETH
CENTURY, RACETRACKS WERE DESIGNED TO SUIT THE NATURE OF POWERED
MACHINES.
• THE EARLIEST TRACKS WERE MODIFIED HORSE RACING COURSES. RACING
AUTOMOBILES IN SUCH FACILITIES BEGAN IN SEPTEMBER 1896,
• MOTORCYCLE RACES WERE RUN ON HIGH, BANKED, WOODEN RACE TRACKS
CALLED BOARD TRACKS.
• DURING THE 1920S, MANY OF THE RACES ON THE AAA CHAMPIONSHIP CIRCUIT
WERE RUN ON SUCH BOARD TRACKS. MODERN RACETRACKS ARE DESIGNED WITH
SPECTATOR SAFETY BEING PARAMOUNT, FOLLOWING INCIDENTS OF SPECTATOR
AND TRACK MARSHALS FATALITIES. THESE OFTEN INVOLVE RUN OFF AREAS,
BARRIERS, AND HIGH FENCING.
HISTORY IN INDIAN CONTEXT
MOTORSPORT
• THE FIRST RECORDED MOTORSPORT EVENT TAKE PLACE IN INDIA WAS
CHENNAI.
• EXPLANATION: THE MOTOR SPORT EVENT THAT GOT RECORDED
FIRST IN INDIA IS AT MADRAS CURRENTLY KNOWN AS CHENNAI. THE
INSERTION OF MOTOR SPORT RACE IS NOT SMOOTH IN INDIA WHEN
COMPARED TO OTHER COUNTRIES, AS FEW INDIANS ONLY BOUGHT
SOPHISTICATED CARS.
• ON 1 FEBRUARY 2005, NARAIN KARTHIKEYAN BECAME INDIA'S FIRST FORMULA ONE
 RACING DRIVER. IN MARCH 2007, HE ALSO BECAME THE FIRST EVER INDIAN-BORN
DRIVER TO COMPETE IN A NASCAR SERIES. HE DEBUTED IN THE NASCAR 
CAMPING WORLD TRUCK SERIES IN THE KROGER 250.FORCE INDIA F1 IS A 
FORMULA ONE MOTOR RACING TEAM. THE TEAM WAS FORMED IN OCTOBER 2007,
WHEN A CONSORTIUM LED BY INDIAN BUSINESSMEN VIJAY MALLYA AND MICHIEL MOL
 BOUGHT THE SPYKER F1 TEAM FOR € 88 MILLION. AFTER GOING THROUGH 29 RACES
WITHOUT A POINT, FORCE INDIA WON THEIR FIRST FORMULA ONE WORLD
CHAMPIONSHIP POINTS AND PODIUM PLACE WHEN GIANCARLO FISICHELLA FINISHED
SECOND IN THE 2009 BELGIAN GRAND PRIX. NEW DELHI HOSTED THE 
INDIAN GRAND PRIX IN 2011 AT BUDDH INTERNATIONAL CIRCUIT IN GREATER NOIDA,
50 KM FROM NEW DELHI.
• IN THE 2011 FORMULA ONE SEASON, KARUN CHANDHOK WAS THE TEST DRIVER FOR 
TEAM LOTUS & NARAIN KARTHIKEYAN WAS THE TEST DRIVER FOR HRT. BOTH
CHANDHOK AND KARTHIKEYAN STEPPED IN (FOR JARNO TRULLI AND 
DANIEL RICCIARDO, RESPECTIVELY) AT THE 2011 INDIAN GRAND PRIX; IT WAS THE
FIRST TIME TWO INDIAN DRIVERS COMPETE IN THE SAME FORMULA ONE GRAND PRIX.
• IN DECEMBER 2013, MAHINDRA RACING JOIN THE FIA FORMULA E CHAMPIONSHIP.
FOR THE FIRST SEASON IN 2014–15, KARUN CHANDHOK DRIVES ALONGSIDE 
BRUNO SENNA. MAHINDRA FINISHES 8TH OF THE TEAMS CHAMPIONSHIP. THE INDIAN
DRIVER LEAVES THE TEAM AFTER THE FIRST SEASON, AND IS REPLACED BY 
NICK HEIDFELD.

RACE TRACK
THE MADRAS MOTOR RACE TRACK IS THE FIRST RACE TRACK IN INDIA AND IS
ALSO INDIA'S FIRST FIA RECOGNISED RACE TRACK. INAUGURATED IN 1990, IT WAS
ORIGINALLY CALLED THE IRUNGATTUKOTTAI RACE TRACK. LOCATED AT
IRUNGATTUKOTAI, SRIPERUMBUDUR, CHENNAI, IT BECAME THE CENTRE FOR
MOTORSPORTS ACTIVITY IN THE COUNTRY.

• INDIAN MOTORSPORTS HAVE A VERY NON-LINEAR HISTORY SINCE THE


BEGINNING OF ITS INCEPTION IN 1902. BACK THEN, IT WAS VERY POPULAR
BECAUSE THERE WERE NO GOVERNING BODIES INVOLVED AND, ANYONE WITH
AN AUTOMOBILE COULD PARTICIPATE IN THE EVENT.
• IT WAS ALL FOR PLEASURE AND ENTERTAINMENT. PEOPLE FROM ALL WALKS OF
LIFE CAME TO WITNESS THE MADNESS OF MOTORSPORTS. DURING THOSE
GOOD OLD DAYS, IT WAS DANGEROUS AND BECAUSE OF LACK OF SAFETY,
PEOPLE EVEN USED TO DIE DURING THE RACE EVENTS.
• IN TODAY’S INDIA MOTORSPORT HAS BEEN PORTRAYED AS A DARK SPORT.
PEOPLE HAVE FORGOTTEN THE GOLDEN GLORY DAYS OF MOTORSPORTS.
