BRICKS

This document discusses bricks, including their composition, types, properties of good bricks, manufacturing process, advantages, disadvantages, and applications. Bricks are traditionally made of clay but can also contain soil, sand, and lime. Good bricks are uniform in color, shape, and size with a metallic ringing sound when struck and absorb less than 20% water. Bricks are manufactured by preparing, moulding, drying, and burning clay. They are economical, durable, and fire resistant but construction takes more time and they have low tensile strength. Bricks are used to construct walls, floors, arches, and retaining walls.

WHAT IS BRICKS?
 A brick is a building material used to make
buildings, and walls and other elements in
construction.
 Traditionally, the term brick referred to a
unit composed of clay, but it is now used to
denote any rectangular units laid in mortar.
 A brick can be composed of clay bearing,
soil ,sand, and lime
TYPES OF BRICKS
 Mud blocks
 Clay blocks
 Fly ash blocks
 Concrete blocks
 Glass blocks
 Stabilized mud block
 Aerated concrete block
PROPERTIES OF GOOD
BRICKS
 Color: The color of good brick should be uniform.
It may be deep red , cherry or copper colored.
 Shape : Bricks should be uniform in shape straight
right angled edges.
 Size : Size of a brick should be standard as
prescribed by Indian standards i.e. 19cm*9cm*9cm
.
 Soundness : A good brick should give metallic
ringing sound when struck with another brick.
 Water absorption: First class brick should
not absorb water more than 20% of its dry
weight when soaked in water for 24hrs.
 Strength : Bricks should not break when
dripped on hard ground from a height of
about 1m.
 Crushing strength : The crushing strength of
a brick should not be less than 3.5N/sq mm
MANUFACTURING
PROCESS
Manufacturing of bricks consists of following 4
steps or operation :
1. Preparation of brick
2. Moulding of bricks
3. Air drying of brick
4. Burning of bricks
ADVANTAGES
 Economical (raw material is easily
available)
 Hard and durable
 Very low maintenance cost is required
.
 Highly fire resistant
 Produces less environment pollution
during manufacturing process
 Reusable and recyclable
DISADVANTAGES
 Time consuming construction
 Very less tensile strength
 Rough surfaces of bricks may cause mold
growth if not properly cleaned
 Cleaning brick surfaces is a hard job cannot
be used in high seismic zones.
APPLICATION
 Construction of walls of any size .
 Construction of floors.
 Construction of arches and cornices
 Construction of brick retaining wall
 Making Khoa(broken bricks of required
size)to use as an aggregate in concrete
 Manufacture of surki( powered bricks) to be
used in lime plaster and lime concrete
