Types of Reproduction: Sexual and Asexual Reproduction

This document discusses two types of reproduction: asexual and sexual. Asexual reproduction involves one parent and results in offspring that are genetically identical clones. It occurs through budding, binary fission, or regeneration. Sexual reproduction involves two parents and results in offspring with a unique combination of genetic information from both parents. Some organisms can reproduce through both asexual and sexual means.

Sexual and Asexual Reproduction

Essential Questions
1. Why do organisms reproduce differently?
2. What are the advantages and disadvantages?
3. How might this influence their survival?
I. Asexual Reproduction
A. When ONE parent creates an offspring that is
genetically identical to itself (clone).
• 1. 100% of offspring’s
genetic information
comes from the parent.
1. Examples: Bacteria,
amoebas, diatomic algae
B. Three Basic Types of Asexual Reproduction

1. Budding: When offspring grows out of the body

of the parent. (Yeast)

Hydra
2. Binary Fission: The parent cell divides into two
identical cells. (Bacteria)
3. Regeneration:
If a piece of the
parent is
detached, it can
grow and
develop into a
new offspring.
(Starfish)
II. Sexual Reproduction
A. When TWO parents create offspring that is
genetically different from themselves and other
offspring.
• 1. 50% of offspring’s genetic
information comes from each
parent. (Each parent provides half
of their chromosomes).
2. Examples: Humans, animals, plants
III. Some organisms can reproduce via BOTH
Sexual and Asexual Reproduction.

A. Examples: Snails,
bees, aphids, starfish,
coral, sponges,
strawberries, wild
garlic, ferns, fungi,
paramecium.
