Simplifying Algebraic Expressions

Level 5 04/25/2020

Learning Objectives:

• Able to simplify an expression

• Able to simplify an expression involving

multiplication

• Begin to start expanding brackets

Your turn…
Simplify the following expressions. Copy the question into your
workbook, writing the answer next to it.
1. a + a + b 6. 9 x a
2a + b 9a
2. 3a – 2a + 4b + b 7. 13 x b
a + 5b 13b
3. 8a + 5a – 6a 8. g x h
7a gh
4. 12b + 5a + 3a – 8b 9. 9 x j x j x j
8a + 4b 9j3
5. 4a + 6b + 7c + 9a – 2b – c 10. 6 x p x q x p x 2
13a + 4b + 6c 12p2q
Expanding Brackets
• Expanding brackets is often called “multiplying
out” brackets because we use multiplication
to get rid of the brackets.
Expanding Brackets
• To expand a bracket, multiply the term outside
the bracket by everything inside the bracket

x
5(a + 3)
x
5a + 15
Expanding Brackets
7(n + 6)

8(p – 3)
Your turn…
• Expand the following brackets:

4x + 20
a) 4(x + 5)
3y + 27
b) 3(y + 9)
5a - 10
c) 5(a – 2)
11r – 44
d) 11(r – 4) ab + 3a
e) a(b + 3) n2 + 5n
f) n(n + 5) 8p – p2
g) p(8 – p)
