Topic Sentences

A topic sentence is a
statement that tells what
your paragraph will be
about.
Topic Sentences
A good topic sentence does two important things.

1. Helps you stay focused on the main idea of your paragraph

2. Helps readers to know what your paragraph will be about


Topic Sentences

A topic sentence should:

• State the main idea,


• Include or summarize
reasons that support main
idea, and
• Make a claim about the main
idea of the paragraph.
Example of a Topic Sentence
Let’s read a topic sentence and see if we can identify the
•Main idea (what you’re writing about)
•Support (what you think about the topic)

A healthy diet includes fruits and vegetables.

Main idea Support

What claim is being made?


For a diet to be healthy it must include fruits and vegetables.

1. Ask yourself: “What am I writing about?”
The answer to this question will be your main idea.

2. Ask yourself: “What do I know about the main idea?”


The answer to this question will be your support.

3. Create a bubble map.

STUDENTS WORKSHEET
Instruction A:
Every topic sentence will have a topic and a controlling idea. The controlling
idea shows the direction the paragraph will take. Identify the Topic Sentence
and Controlling Idea from the following sentences
Example:
Topic Sentence: There are many reasons why pollution in ABC Town is the worst in
the world.
Answer:
The topic is "pollution in ABC Town is the worst in the world" and the controlling
idea is "many reasons."
1.To be an effective CEO requires certain characteristics.
2.There are many possible contributing factors to global warming.
3.Fortune hunters encounter many difficulties when exploring a shipwreck.
4.Dogs make wonderful pets because they help you to live longer.
5.Crime in poverty-stricken areas occurs as a result of a systemic discrimination.
6.Teen pregnancy may be prevented by improved education.
7.Cooking requires a number of different skills.
8.It is important to be ready before buying a house.
9.Graduating from high school is important for many different reasons.
10.Having a first child is difficult because of the significant adjustments in your life.
11.Remodeling a kitchen successfully requires research and a good eye.
NOTE:
•A carefully thought out topic sentence has two functions. First, it
helps you, the author, to stay focused. Second, a clearly stated
topic and controlling idea will give readers the tools they need to
clearly understand what you have to say.
•Remember that topic sentences set the tone for the paragraph
and should relate back to the thesis or the main idea of the paper.
