1. The French brothers Louis and Auguste Lumiere are considered the inventors of cinema with their first film Workers Leaving the Factory in 1895. 2. Early cartoons in the 1900s did not have characters or stories, but were simply moving drawings. The first cartoon character was Gertie the Dinosaur in 1914. Felix the Cat became the first cartoon series. 3. Walt Disney was pioneering with the first sound cartoon, Steamboat Willie in 1928, introducing characters Mickey and Minnie Mouse. The first full-length cartoon was Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 1937, which became hugely popular along with other early Disney films.

The first cartoons were made soon
after the first films.
In 1906, Stuart Blackton drew a lot of
faces on a blackboard, photographed
them and made a short cartoon called
“Funny faces.” After that, other people
started making cartoons too. These
cartoons didn’t have characters or
stories. They were just moving pictures

In 1914, Winsor McCay made a short
cartoon called “Gertie the Dinosaur”.
Everyone loved it because it had a
character! Gertie was the first cartoon
character. Another popular cartoon
character was Felix the Cat. When people
saw the first cartoon about Felix they liked
him so much that the studio made cartoons
about him again and again. “Felix the Cat”
was the first cartoon series.

At that time, cartoons were black and
white and silent. Walt Disney was the
first to make cartoons with sound and
in colour. In 1928, Disney drew a funny
character for a cartoon : a mouse. The
mouse had short round ears, a black
nose and a funny face. Disney called him
Mickey. He also drew a friend for Mickey
and called her Minnie Mouse. Cartoons
with Mickey and Minnie became hits!

In 1937, the Disney Studio made the first
long cartoon called «Snow White and the
Seven Dwarfs”. Next came “Dumbo”,
“Bambi”, “Peter Pan”, “The Jungle Book”
and other films. They all became very
popular. The Disney Studio soon became
one of the most popular studios in the
world.

saw the first computer cartoon,
“Toy Story” (from Pixar).
Then came “Toy Story2”. Some
other computer-animated cartoons
are “Bugs’ Life” and “Shrek”.
