The document provides an introduction to a presentation assignment on minimizing the effect of lateral loads such as earthquakes on multi-story reinforced concrete buildings by optimizing the position of reinforced concrete lift cores. It discusses modeling 4 building models in SAP 2000 software - without a lift core, with the lift core on the outer edge of the building in the X direction, with the lift core on the outer edge in the Y direction, and with the lift core at the center. It is expected that analyzing these models will help locate the optimum lift core position and minimize lateral load effects on the building through cooperation between the lift core and structure when properly positioned.

INTRODUCTION

 Bangladesh is one of the most earthquake prone countries in the world. There
are several fault zones active in this junction area, which are the sources of
earthquake. Four major sources of earthquakes in and around Bangladesh ):
i) Assam fault zone ii) Tripura fault zone iii) Sub Dauki fault zone and iv)
Bogra fault zone. Sylhet is situated in the Sub Dauki fault zone. Form this
perspective earthquake is an important factor while designing any kind of
structure. Specially for Sylhet region.
 RC Multi-storey buildings are adequate for resisting both the vertical and
horizontal load . when such building is designed without shear wall the beam
and column sizes are heavy, steel quantity is also required in large amount
thus there is lot of congestion at these joint and it is difficult to place and
vibrate concrete at these places and displacement is quite heavy which
induces heavy forces in member . Shear wall may become imperative from
the point of view of economy and control of lateral deflection. In RC multi-
storey building R.C.C lift well or shear wall are usual requirement (Ms
Aainawala and Dr . P,S Pajgade).
In RC multi-storey building R.C.C lift wall are usual requirement. So it is
economical for us to control lateral load effect on a multistory building by
proper positioning of lift core.
Commonly used lateral load resisting system :

I. Shear wall
II. Lateral bracing
III.Damping
IV. Base isolation technique
OBJECTIVES

 To determine the lateral load effect on a multi-storied building

with and without lift core.

 To minimize the lateral load effect on a multi-storied building by

optimum positioning of lift core and also find out the maximum
floor displacement and inter story drift.
 Comparison of the drift value, displacement, base shear, variation
of moment/shear on a selected frame of different types of
building respective to different positioning of Lift core .
LITERATURE REVIEW
 2.1 General
In the last ten years, much attention has been paid
to performance-based seismic design in earthquake
engineering research. This new method requires
designing a building for several expected
performance levels associated with different
earthquake hazard levels. To meet this objective, a
more rational design procedure based on inelastic
displacement rather than elastic force is needed. At
present, the method has been suggested in some
recommended or guidance codes and documents.
Important step in performance-based design is to
estimate the nonlinear seismic response of buildings.
There are two procedures: nonlinear time history
analysis and simplified nonlinear analysis. Here in
referred to as nonlinear time history analysis.
 2.2 Seismic Records in Terms of Time History
The time history method is the only reliable
method of accurately assessing performance. But
code requirements for selecting time histories
result in much higher levels of input than
alternative methods such as the response
spectrum procedure. It is required to use records in
accordance with the applicable code requirements.
 2.3 Recommended Records for Time History
Analysis
The best method of selecting time histories is to
have the seismologist supply them. However, this
option is not always available and, if not, some
guidance can be obtained from codes as to means
of selecting and scaling records. Obtaining an
Earthquake data from nearest region the values are
practiced to be scaled as per site ground
acceleration.
 2.4 Scaling of Time History
Code requirements for time history selection require use
of records appropriate to fault proximity and so often one
or more records similar to the obtained result may be
used. The manner of scaling specified by codes such as
UBC (1997) and FEMA-273 (1997) also result in relatively
large scaling factors (Tremayne , Bill & Trevor E Kelly)
discussed these phenomena in some details.
 2.5 Peak Ground Acceleration
Peak ground acceleration (PGA) is often described as
a measure of earthquake acceleration. It is not the
same as the Richter Magnitude Scale which is the
measure of the overall magnitude or size of an
earthquake. It is also unlike the Mercalli Intensity
Scale, which is a means of describing the intensity of
an earthquake that is based on personal reports from
firsthand observers following an earthquake event.
During an earthquake, the intense built-up energy
that is stored in the Earth’s crust is suddenly released
giving off seismic waves. The resulting seismic waves
travel over long distances in all directions.
 2.6 Different Methods of Analysis
Four distinct analytical procedures can be used in
Systematic Rehabilitation: Linear Static, Linear
Dynamic, Nonlinear Static, and Nonlinear Dynamic
Procedures. The choice of analytical method is
subject to limitations based on building
characteristics. The linear procedures maintain the
traditional use of a linear stress-strain
relationship, but incorporate adjustments to
overall building deformations and material
acceptance criteria to permit better consideration
of the probable nonlinear characteristics of
seismic response. The Nonlinear Static Procedure,
often called “pushover analysis,” uses simplified
nonlinear techniques to estimate seismic
structural deformations. The Nonlinear Dynamic
Procedure, commonly known as nonlinear time
history analysis, requires considerable judgment
and experience to perform, and may only be used
within some limitations.

STUDY

o Different kinds of software are used in dynamic

analysis of a structure. But most popularly used and
available in Bangladesh are ETABS (Extended Analysis
of Building Structure) & SAP (Structural Advance
Program). Structural analysis program software (SAP
2000) version 14 is used in this study. Two concrete
frames of 10 storeys and 7 storeys are modeled and
analyzed by this software. Nonlinear modal time
history analysis linear static analysis considering static
analysis is performed by this software.
