Data collection

 Data is collected by combining the various textbooks in


China from 1947 to 2005
 Three textbooks are separated due to their distinctive
features.
 1: He Gangqiang’s Art and Cra of Translation (2003)
 2: Mei Deming’s A Course in Interpreting (2003)
 3:Pan Hong’s A Course in English-Chinese Business
Translation (2004)
Key findings/major postulates

 Initially, translation textbooks were ignored in China.


 The textbooks exert an increasing influence on
Translation Studies as a discipline, as well as on the
social and economic development of China.
 The textbooks are prescriptive and lack a general model
for dividing translation into basic categories.
 The textbooks are heavily influenced by theories from
linguistics and foreign-language teaching pedagogy.
Limitation

 This study is limited to the historical perspective of


textbooks in China.
 Translation textbooks are considered as a component in
applied branch of Translation studies.
 Business translation is more focused according to
societal need of China.
Differences and similarities with other authors
 Monday less focused on applied branch
 Chinese modification of applied branch is described in
this article.
 Translation textbook work must be taken into account in
surveys of Translation Studies.
 Monday provides an overview of key contributions to
Western Translation Studies.

studies abstracts).
 Contents and categories of this corpus are focused
points in this research.
 A graphic representation of the annual distribution of
the total number of abstracts during those years (1997-
2011)

 50 key noun-phrases extracted from the corpus of a 40


million word.
 Over the time, there is a relative increase, decrease or
stability in number of abstracts in TSA category.
 From time to time, different disciplines are included in
this discipline such as Psychoanalysis and ethnography.
 The availability of new methods enables new
perspectives i.e. corpus-analysis
Limitations

 Limited to only one database of translation studies.


 Different databases like BITRA can also be combined in
this corpus to get the more reliable results.
 Only the role of editors of bibliographies is highlighted
Differences and similarities with other authors

 Monday talks about different publications in disciplines


of translation studies
 This research highlights the role of editors and
publishers in translation studies as they are equally
important along with authors.
 The data representation in corpus is affected by both
authors and editors of different translation
bibliographies.
