The document discusses metaphors for human nature using the avocado and artichoke as examples. The avocado view sees human nature as having a stable, enduring core self that remains unchanged by life experiences. The artichoke view sees human nature as more changeable and influenced by outside factors, without a fixed core identity. Students are asked to consider which view they identify with more and to describe their own sense of self and how it has changed over time.
