Mounting of Parts: Presented By: 1.siddhi Marathe 2.aarti Pawar 3.ramayya

This document discusses the proper mounting of rotating machine parts, including gears, bearings, and shafts. It outlines several key principles: 1) Every rotating part must be supported radially and retained axially for proper function. 2) Gears can be mounted using keys, circlips, steps in the shaft diameter, cotter pins, fixing screws, or splined shafts to ensure proper torque transmission without excess movement. 3) Bearings must also be carefully mounted to ensure accuracy, long life, and good performance, with considerations for alignment, clearance, and preventing oval deformation.

Support and Retainment of Machine parts

Rotation is the motion most commonly found in machinery. The rotating

parts often carry heavy loads, and are almost always vital parts of the
machine.
For power transmission the following elements can be properly mounted on
shafts:
• Gears
• Mounted Bearings
• Roller Chains
• Timing Belts
• Overload Clutches
• Torque Limiters
• Shaft Couplings
• Sprockets
• Pulleys

• The fundamental requirements of support and retainment of rotating machine

parts :
1. Every part of a rotating assembly must be supported radially.
2. Every part of a rotating assembly must be retained or held axially.
1. Mounting of Gears
Importance

• If the gear is not mounted properly, it is impossible to avoid problems regarding

bad tooth contact noise, wear, and breakage
• Proper mounting enables transmission of both torque and axial thrust by means
of frictional forces, without the need of tight manufacturing tolerances of
mating components.
There are many principles for mounting a gear on a shaft

1. Attachment with keys and circlips

•The gear and shaft are keyed together, rotate as
a single unit.
• Circlip stops axial movement of gear
• There are two types of circlip mounting :
Shaft mounting - groove to be cut into hub
Inside the hub - groove to be cut on shaft

2. By providing a step
• To prevent sliding of gear, the diameter of the
shaft can be increased.
• The diameter increase prevents the gear from
sliding to the right on the shaft.
3. Attachment with cotter pins
• Assuring an accurate relative positioning of the two
pieces and transmits movement
• A very good resistance to vibration
• Used where there is less torque involved
• Not recommended where frequent removal is
necessary

4. Assembly with a fixing screw

• Very simple

• Just needs a threaded hole to be machined into the

hub and shaft
•  Recommended for the fixing of low module gear
and for low torque transmission
5. Attachment with Self -lubricating bush
• Reliable, simple and efficient rotational motion
• It manages to limit friction between the shaft
and hub
• Stops relative axial movement at the same time
• No requirement of special machining

6. Mounting by Spline-shaft
• A splined shaft with the splines cut along the
axis can be used to mount gear.
2. MOUNTING OF BEARING

• The method of mounting rolling bearings strongly affects their

accuracy, life, and performance, so their mounting deserves
careful attention.
• Their characteristics should first be thoroughly studied, and
then they should be mounted in the proper manner.
3. Mounting of Spherical Roller Bearings
with Tapered Bores

When a self-aligning ball bearing is mounted on a

shaft with an adapter, be sure that the residual
clearance does not become too small. Sufficient
clearance for easy alignment of the outer ring must
be allowed.

When a large bearing is mounted on a shaft, the

outer ring may be deformed into an oval shape by
its own weight. If the clearance is measured at the
lowest part of the deformed bearing, the measured
value may be bigger than the true value.
CASE STUDY • Locknuts have been used to clamp the
inner race of each bearing to the shaft.
These prevent axial motion to the right.
• The assembly is not affected by
manufacturing tolerances on the lengths
of the parts assembled on the shaft.
• The diameter of the shaft between the
gear and the right hand bearing can be
increased to prevent sliding of gear to
right.
• Keys
Best construction
• Spacers
• Bearing caps-bolts
