Lahi Na Paagi: Presented By: Kurt Daniel L. Amores
The document discusses Leonardo da Vinci's wide-ranging talents and skills, which included drawing, painting, architecture, engineering, anatomy, optics, mathematics, astronomy, cartography, geology, and writing. It also addresses some issues with compartmentalized education that limits creativity, conformity to groupthink, and the lasting impacts of colonial mentality in the Philippines over nearly 400 years of Spanish, American, and Japanese rule. Three questions are posed as a "test" of colonial mentality, related to continents on Earth, the first circumnavigation, and bathroom hygiene practices.

Dr. Glen Martin Green • almost unrivaled skills in drawing and painting - lifelike yet sublime, • skills in architectural design from fort battlements to churches, • skills in invention and technical engineering from waterworks to tanks and flying machines, • prescient skills in anatomy encompassing the human body and that of plants as well, • skills in optics, mathematics, and astronomy and • skills in cartography and geology • copious ability in language and writing to record his thoughts for posterity. Dilemma of Compartmentalized Education • modern academic institutions promote concentrated learning but we should realize it is intensely segregated along traditional disciplinary lines. Perils of Conforming to Groupthink "Going with the flow" thinking that conforms to already popular conceptions also severely limits creativity by making some thoughts nearly ubiquitous while most others just wither and die. This pattern of conformity promotes and almost insures repeated boom and bust cycles. Lasting Tragedy of Colonial Mentality The Philippines suffers from a cause linked to it's unique history, that of being a colony of no less than three colonial powers: Spain (from 1565 when the Philippines was gradually brought by force of arms under Legaspi until 1898), the US (from 1898 until 1946), and Japan (1942-1945 during WWII).
During these periods (totaling almost 400 years)
the wishes and the thinking of these colonial powers were imposed on Filipino thought and action through overt coercion and often-violent oppression. 3-point "Test" of Colonial Mentality 1) How many continents does the planet Earth have?
2) Who was the first person to circumnavigate the Earth?
3) When going to the CR, what system is better to use?
a) toilet paper, or b) the kabo and water. How many continents does the planet Earth have? • Let's consider what a continent is. Is Cebu a continent? No it's too small, it's an island. So what's the biggest Island? Greenland is the biggest, followed by Borneo, New Guinea, and Madagascar - the fourth largest island. • So a continent is a huge body of land bigger than Greenland. But there's one more thing to consider: a continent is surrounded by water and not just any water but marine water we call the ocean. A simple definition of a continent then is a large body of land bigger than Greenland surrounded by ocean. Who was the first person to circumnavigate the Earth? Enrique was the slave of Magellan and the armada's interpreter. He was perhaps captured or bought in the early stages of the Portuguese siege of Malacca, in which Magellan fought prior to the famous voyage. Enrique conversed with local people in the Americas and the Pacific, but when the armada reached what is now the Gulf of Leyte, Enrique was able to directly converse with the locals. When going to the CR, what system is better to use? a) toilet paper, or b) the kabo and water. Filipinos traditionally used the kabo, a small dipper for water. These plastic dippers seemingly last forever and the cost of the water they contain per use (about one liter) is so small that one can consider the cost of this Filipino method to be practically free. In contrast, toilet paper is anything but free, since the manufacture of toilet paper requires a large enterprise to produce. First, large tracts of land have to be bought and secured over decades, trees need to be planted and nurtured for more than a decade until harvest. In the States trees are usually harvested and transported to the paper mill with diesel equipment and trucks, the mill has to be designed, constructed and maintained, the mill needs to be staffed by skilled personnel, it also demands fuel, electricity and a host of processing chemicals to convert the trees into toilet paper.
