Adaptive and Innate Immunity

Macrophages and neutrophils provide the initial immune response, but cannot always eliminate infections. The adaptive immune system employs lymphocytes to provide a more versatile defense. Innate immune cells play a crucial role in initiating and directing the adaptive response, with most infections first activating innate immunity. Activation of specialized antigen presenting cells by the innate response is necessary to induce the adaptive immune response, where lymphocytes activated by antigen give rise to clones of antigen-specific cells that mediate adaptive immunity.

Adaptive and Innate Immunity
• Macrophages and neutrophils provide first line of
defense

• However, can not always eliminate infectious

microorganisms

• Lymphocytes of the adaptive immune system provide a

more versatile means of defense

• Innate cells however play a crucial role in initiation and

subsequent direction of the adaptive immune response
Adaptive and Innate Immunity
• Most infectious agents induce inflammatory responses
by activating innate immunity

• Activation of specialized antigen presenting cells is

necessary first step for induction of adaptive immunity

• Lymphocytes activated by antigen give rise to clones

of antigen specific cells that mediate the adaptive
immunity
Receptors of the innate immune system

• Innate immunity

• Receptors

• Defects and diseases
