Narnarayan Shastri Institute of Technology: Presentation On

The document provides an overview of ignition systems for internal combustion engines. It discusses the key components of an ignition system including the battery, ignition coil, distributor, and spark plugs. It explains that the ignition system turns the engine on and off by creating a timed spark to ignite the air-fuel mixture in each cylinder. The document also summarizes different types of ignition systems such as battery ignition systems, magneto ignition systems, and electronic ignition systems.

Ignition System
 Introduction:
Ignition system
– Turns the engine on and off.
– Creates a timed spark and distributes it to the
cylinders.
– Spark is distributed to the spark plugs Jumps the
gap and ignites air-fuel mixture
– Timing of the spark varies with engine speed
– Amount of time for fuel to burn in the cylinder is
constant

Ignition System
 Ignition Parts:
 BATTERY: Provides power for system.
 IGNITION SWITCH: Allows driver to turn ignition
on and off.
 IGNITION COIL: Changes battery voltage to 30,000V
during normal operation and has a potential to
produce up to 60,000V.
 SWITCHING DEVICE : Mechanical or electronic
switch that operates ignition coil(Pick-up coil,
Crank sensor, Cam sensor).
 SPARK PLUG: Uses high voltage from ignition coil
to produce an arc in the combustion chamber.
 IGNITION SYSTEM WIRES : Connect components.

 Types of ignition system:

Battery (coil) ignition system:
 Most of older spark ignition engines use battery
ignition system. In this system energy required for
producing spark is obtained from a 6 to 12 volt
battery.
 Passenger cars, light trucks, some motorcycle and
large stationary engines are fitted with battery ignition
system.
 Part of system: Battery, ignition switch, ignition coil,
cam and contact breaker, condenser, distributor.

Ignition System
 Ignition Circuits:
PRIMARY CIRCUIT
 Includes all the components
working on low voltage
(Battery, Alternator).
SECONDARY CIRCUIT
 Consists of wires and points
between coil out-put and the
spark plug ground.
• Battery voltage converted to high
voltage by ignition coil, Spark jumps
across gap at end of spark plug ,
Spark timing is critical to power
output

Ignition System
 Ignition Coil:
 Heart of the ignition system
– Has a low-voltage primary winding
and high-voltage secondary
winding
 Magnetic field
– Collapses when current flow is
interrupted in primary winding
 Magnetic lines of force
– Cut across the secondary windings
and create high voltage and low
amperage

Ignition System
 Distributor

•Actuates the on/off cycle of current flow through the ignition coil
primary windings.
•It distributes the coils high voltage to the plugs wires.
Page :- 9
Ignition System
 Distributor(cont'd.)

• It causes the spark to occur at each plug earlier in the compression

stroke as engine speed increases, and vice versa.
• Changes spark timing.
• Some distributor shafts operate the oil pump.

Ignition System
 Spark Plugs:
 Its is generate the spark in combustion chamber using
the very high voltage (10,000 V to 20,000 V) received
from the ignition coil.
 Spark ignites compressed air-fuel mixture
– Length of threaded area called reach
– Heat range indicates how fast heat travels away from the
center electrode
– Spark plugs have a tapered seat or flat seat with a gasket to
seal against cylinder head
– There is controversy over long-life spark plugs Precious metals
are used to prolong life
Page :- 11
Ignition System
 Spark Plugs (cont'd.)
 Resistor plugs and wires
– Resistance added to secondary ignition system with
spark plugs or spark plug cables
– Resistor inside spark plug raises firing voltage required
by the output coil
 Spark plug cable
– Resistor cables are very fragile
– Secondary wiring must be well insulated
– Leak in insulation will cause a spark to short to ground

 Magneto ignition system:

 Magneto ignition system has its own current
generated device, therefore , battery is not
required.
 It is most used in moped, motor cycle, scooter
and racing car.
 In this system current is generating by
magneto. All other part is same as battery
ignition system.

Ignition System
 Electronic ignition system:
 Transistorised coil ignition system :
• The conventional battery ignition system is
replaced by transistorised coil ignition (TCI)
system.
• This system has been found to offer decided
advantages in handling the increasing voltage
required for high performance of the engine,
longer spark plug life, reduced wear and
maintenance of ignition system and high reliability

Ignition System

Page :- 16
Ignition System
 Advantage:
• There is higher ignition voltage and a long duration of
spark
• Over the entire speed range, its provide spark
consistently.
• Wear of the contact breaker point is reduced.

 Disadvantages:
• Its requires mechanical contact breaker point for timing
the spark as in the conventional system.
• The voltage-rise time at the spark plug is almost the
same as that in the conventional system.

Ignition System
 High volume capacitive discharge
ignition system:
• In this system capacitor is used as a means of
energy storage. DC to DC convertor is used to
convert 12 V coming from battery to about 500 V.
• It is charged to a high voltage about 500 V by
means of a transformer and at the moment
ignition, it is discharged by a thyristor through
the primary circuit which generates a high
voltage pulse in the secondary circuit to fire the
spark plug.
