NEW GENERAL EDUCATION
CURRICULUM
CMO NO. 59, S.1996
In accordance to the pertinent
provision of RA No. 7722 or Higher
Education Act of 1994, in order to
update General Education Curriculum
or GEC, a new GEC is hereby
promulgated by and implemented by
the Commission as part of
baccalaureate degree programs in all
Higher Education Institutions or HEI’s.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENT FOR
THE NEW GENERAL EDUCATION
CURRICULUM
• Language and Literature- 24 units
• Mathematics and Natural Sciences- 15 units
• Humanities and Social Sciences - 18 units
• Mandated Subjects- 6 units
INTERDISCIPLINARY APPROACH
A.Language and Literature
I. Provides students with effective
communication skills both in English
and Filipino
II. All HEI’s must require a placement
examination in the English Language
for all incoming first years.

III. Literature 1 must cover “The Literature of


the Philippines”
IV. Literature 2 must cover “The Literature of
the World”
B. Mathematics and Natural Sciences-
increase scientific literacy of
students.

of human experience and
integrate all branches of
knowledge to understand an
individual and society.
