INTRODUCTION:
Biomass is the material derived from plants that use sunlight to grow
which include plant and animal material such as wood from forests,
material left over from agricultural and forestry processes, and organic
industrial, human and animal wastes. Biomass comes from a variety of
sources which include:
1-Wood from natural forests and woodlands
2-Forestry plantations
3-Forestry residues
4-Animal wastes
5-Food processing wastes
Why is BIOMASS Considered a Renewable Energy?
it is considered to be as
renewable source of energy
because carbon dioxide and
water contained inside plants
and animals are released back
in to the atmosphere when
they are burned and we can
grow more plants and crops to
create biomass energy
Biomass Technologies:
1-Direct Combustion: Combustion systems for burning biomass vary from
small stoves to multi-megawatt combined heat and power (CHP) systems.
Combustion is best suited to biofuels with low moisture content, as it uses a
portion of the energy to evaporate the water. The technology is usually
limited to providing heating but it can also be used for electricity generation.
2- Gasification: Gasification involves subjecting solid biomass to hot
steam and air to produce a gaseous biofuel. This gas (also called
synthesis gas) can be burned for heating, electricity production, or may
be further converted to act as a substitute for almost any fossil fuel.
3-Pyrolysis: Pyrolysis is the basic thermo-chemical process for
converting solid biomass to a more useful liquid fuel, commonly called
a bio-oil. This bio-oil can be used in existing oil-fired burners (with very
little adjustment) to generate heat & electricity.
Applications of Biomass:
Biomass systems range from small stoves used in homes for heating or cooking
to large power plants used by centralized utilities to produce electricity. In
residential applications
Biomass can be used for space heating or for cooking. Wood is the most
common source of fuel, although many different materials are used.
New designs for woodstoves can improve the efficiency of the cooking or
heating system, decreasing the amount of fuel that is needed.
Industry and businesses use biomass for several purposes including space
heating, hot water heating, and electricity generation. Many industrial
facilities, such as lumber mills, naturally produce organic waste.
More than 66,000 jobs are supported by the biomass producing industry in the
US alone.
Biomass is The Subject of a Wide Debate
Among the supporters and opponents of the use of biofuels there are
conflicting ideas, the first supporter where they emphasize that this
energy should be used as a sustainable and clean, and the other is
opposed for humanitarian reasons where the consumption of wheat
and corn in large quantities to produce biogas cause famine in poor
countries
Expectation of Biomass will use in future:
