1. Part of Speeches
• In grammar, a part of speech (also called lexical categories,
grammatical categories or word classes) is a linguistic category of
words.
• In English there are eight parts of speech:
Verb: used to show an action or a state of being.
Noun: a word used to refer to people, animals, objects, substances,
states, events, ideas and feelings.
Adjective: used to describe or specify a noun or pronoun.
Adverb: used to modify a verb, adjective and other adverbs.
Pronoun: used in the place of a noun or phrase.
Prepositions: used before nouns to form a phrase that shows
where, when, how and why.
Conjunctions: join clauses or sentences or words.
Interjections: used to show surprise or emotion.

Sentence
 A sentence is the basic grammatical unit. It contains a group of words
and expresses a complete thought.
 There are four types of sentences:
• Declarative sentence
Applicants will be answered in due time. (It makes a statement.)

• Imperative sentence
Show me your photo album, please. ( Gives a command or makes a
request.)

• Interrogative sentence
Do you like this photo? (Asks a question.)

• Exclamatory sentence
What a beautiful dress she is wearing ! (Shows strong feeling)

Sentence Structures
• There are four types of sentences structure:
 Simple sentences: A simple sentence is an independent clause
with no conjunction or dependent clause.
 Compound sentences: A compound sentence is two independent
clauses joined by a conjunction (e.g., and, but, or, for, nor, yet,
so).
 Complex sentences: A complex sentence contains one
independent clause and at least one dependent clause.
 Compound-complex sentences: A compound-complex sentence
contains multiple independent clauses and at least one dependent
clause. These sentences will contain both conjunctions and
subordinators.

Tenses
• Tense is the time described by a verb, shown by its grammatical form. There are
three main tenses in English:
• Present Tense:
Present Simple
Present Continuous
Present Perfect
Present Perfect Continuous
• Past Tense:
Past Simple
Past Continuous
Past Perfect
Past Perfect Continuous
• Future Tense:
Future Simple
Future Continuous
Future Perfect
Future Perfect Continuous

Phrase
A phrase is a grammatical term referring to a group of words that does not
include a subject and verb. There are 9 types of Phrase:
• Noun phrases: consist of a noun and its modifiers.
• Verb phrases: consist of a verb and its modifiers.
• Adverbial phrases: phrases that act as adverbs.
• Gerund phrases: noun phrases that begin with a gerund.
• Infinitive phrases: begin with a verb infinitive and modifiers. It functions as
nouns, adjectives, or adverbs.
• appositive phrase: noun phrase but one that renames another noun in the
sentence.
• participle phrase: begins with a present (-ing) or past (-ed) participle. A
participle phrase includes the participle and its modifiers. Participle
phrases function as adjectives.
• prepositional phrase: a group of words that includes a preposition and a
noun. It functions as either an adjective or an adverb.
• absolute phrase: includes a noun and a participle and any modifiers.

Clause
A clause in grammar is a subject plus a verb.
• There are two major types of clauses:
• Independent clauses
• Dependent clauses
• An independent clause, also called a main clause, is like a sentence.
It consists of a subject and a predicate and can stand alone like a
sentence.
• A dependent clause, also called subordinate clause, has a subject
and a verb but, unlike a dependent clause, it cannot stand alone as
a sentence. There are three types if dependent clause.
• A noun clause
• Adjective clause
• Adverbial clause

Sentence Diagram
• Diagramming sentences might seem complicated at first, but you'll
quickly get the hang of it.
• Sentence diagramming enables you to visually understand the
function of every part of a sentence, which helps you construct
better sentences.
• Once you understand the essentials, diagramming a sentence can
be like completing a Sudoku or a crossword puzzle.
