What is Causative???

Causative verbs express an action which is


caused to happen.

Causative structures indicate that one


thing or person causes another thing or
person to do something or be something.

Causative verbs can be similar in meaning


to passive verbs.
Causative verbs
consist of:

Have Make Get

There are two basic causative structures. One


is like an active, and the other is like a
passive.
HAVE
We use have something done to say that we arrange
for somebody else to do something for us.

1. The active structure:


S + have/has/had + O + Bare Infinitive (V1)
e.g.:
Rita had her friend return her book to the library.
Ramesh is having his father contact the officials.
Mother always has Shyam clean his shoes.
2. The Passive Structure:
S + have/has/had + O + Past Participle (V3)

e.g.:
 Hari always has his shoes cleaned.
 Gita has her paper typed by you.
 Nita was having her hair cut.
 Roshan had the whiteboard erased.
 You had your car cleaned by Rama.
MAKE

Make (force someone to do something)


1. The active structure
S + make + O + Bare Infinitive (V1)

e.g.:
 The teacher made the students work in groups.
 I make you admit your mistakes.
 She makes me arrive early.
 They are making the man paint the house.
2. Passive structure
S + make + O + Past participle (V3)

e.g.:
 Tom makes the door opened.
 The lecturer made this chapter discussed.
 John is making her car repaired this week.
 Webster had made the floor swept.
GET
Get (convince or trick someone into doing something).
1. The active structure:
S + Get + O + To Infinitive (To+V1)

e.g.:
 Rose get her son to tidy his room up.
 Who gets you to smile?
 I don’t get you to come to my house.
2. The Passive Structure
S + Get + O + Past participle (V3)

e.g.:
 The students get the class dismissed.
 Mother gets the soup heated.
 Mary got her motorcycle washed.
 I wasn’t get these books arranged.
  Other causative verbs include:
1. Let (membiarkan)

e.g.:
S + Let + O + Bare Infinitive (V1)
- My sister lets me watch movie on Sunday.

2. Help, Allow/permit, Want, Ask

e. g.:
S + H,A,W,A + O + To Infinitive
- Ahmad helped his sister to do homework
(To + V 1)
