Apron: Size of Gate Position Depends On

The apron is a paved area for parking aircraft and loading/unloading passengers and cargo. It is located near the terminal building or hangars. The size and number of gate positions on the apron depend on the size and turning radius of aircraft as well as how the aircraft enters and exits the gate - under its own power or pushed by a tractor. Gate positioning can be nose-in, nose-out, or parallel to allow for efficient aircraft movement and proximity to terminal facilities.

Apron

• Paved area for parking of aircrafts and loading and

unloading of passengers, cargo
• Located close to the terminal building or hangars.
Size of gate position depends on
• Size of loading area required for each type of
aircraft.-------gate position
• Number of gate position
• Aircraft parking systems
Size of gate position
• Depends on
• Size of aircraft and its minimum turning radius
• Manner in which aircraft enters and leaves the
gate position under its own power or when
pushed by a tractor.
• Aircraft parking configurations.-basic parking
configurations are –nose in and angled nose in
• nose out and angled nose out
• Parallel system
Nose in and angled nose in
advantages: less noise while taxing in (no turning
required)
Hot blast not directed towards terminal building
Aircraft forward door is close to terminal building
Disadvantages
Large power is required while manoeuvring the
aircraft out of gate position after loading
Aircraft rear loading door is far away from terminal
building.
Nose out & angled nose out
• Less power is required while manoeuvring the
aircraft out of its gate position
• Rear loading door is close to terminal building
• Overall apron area required is small
• Disadvantage-hot blast is directed towards
terminal building
Parallel system
• Both the front and rear doors are close to the
terminal building
• Requires more space
• Noise and hot blast are directed towards the
adjacent gate position
Number of gate position
• Depends on peak hourly aircraft movements
and the time during which each aircraft
remains in a gate position---ramp time
• No: of gate position = (capacity of runway x
average gate occupancy time)/60 x 2
• Gate occupancy time= 60 mts for big aircrafts
• 10 mts for small aircrafts
Aircraft parking system
• Aircraft can be grouped adjacent to terminal
building as
• Frontal system
• Open apron system
• Finger system
• Satellite system
Type of parking description Merits & demerits

Frontal system Aircrafts parked in front of Simple and economic. suitable

airport buildings only for small airports

Open apron system Parked on open apron in If number of aircrafts is too large,
rows passengers have to walk long
distances .exposed to weather.
economic

Finger system Parked about the Provides protection to

extensions of terminal passengers. Further expansion is
buildings. Extensions are in easier. Not economic
the shape of fingers

Satellite system A small building is built on Advantages if satellite buildings

apron to park around. are linked through under ground
These buildings are channel. Involves huge
satellites of main terminal construction cost
