Human Resource CIA Assignment

This document contains a human resource assignment for a CIA course presented by 5 students. It discusses an HR strategy case involving a company called Maniyam. The summary is: The document discusses an HR assignment involving a case where the Managing Director of a textile mill only partially accepted the HR strategy proposed by Maniyam to hire 300 unskilled young girls. The VP-HR may have played a role in changing the MD's mind as the strategy did not align with the company's vision or skill requirements for a quality textile mill. If Maniyam were in charge, they would understand the organization's culture first before designing an optimal HR policy and recruitment plan to convince the MD.

The Story so far…
Q1.Comment on the HR Strategy of Maniyam.
Q2. What made the MD change his mind and go against
Maniyam? Whatrole might the VP-HR have played in the episode?

Maniyam’s Idea was only partially accepted as they hired only 300 girls. Following reasons can be recognized.
• Company’s vision and Maniyam’s vision doesn’t go consistent.
• The MD has totally different ideas about the type of recruit.
• Maniyam emphasized unskilled young girls, not considering the fact that HIGH-QUALITY textile mill requires
substantial expertise.
• Hiring of Anil at the training centre maybe considered as a mistake as being from UK he had never been exposed
before to Rural Indian Units, he might not perform efficiently.
• Its possible than freshly 12 th passed candidates may be illegal to be employed.(labour law- 18 years). Company is
not willing to take such risk.
• Considering principal's opinion in running a textile mill doesn’t sound convincing.
• Cost of training activities is quite high.
Q3. What would you have done in this case, if
you were Maniyam?
◦ "I would take following steps;
• First thing I would do is to understand the Organization culture and the expectation of MD in recruiting the
candidates.
• Understand the business operations and find its employee skill-set requirement.
• Design the optimal HR policy and Construct HR planning as expected by company.
• Give MD a brief about the recruitment plan before actually start the implementation.
• If I have idea which is much different than what is expected, I would try to convince management by
providing rationale.
• If my idea is based on social welfare(as in this case), I would rather convince this to MD as a CSR activity,
where profitability will come with added benefit of sustainability.
• I would be more careful appointing my key-subordinate. I would rather choose some experienced local guy
to help me in setting up the operations.
