Transmitter Timing Logic: All timing control
Input connections to power the module
for the transmitter is derived here

Function Generator: Sync Code Generator:

Provides adjustable Provides synchronization
sinewave and DC signals necessary for the
outputs used to transmitter
simulate analog signals

Shift Register: Parallel to

serial conversion takes place
here.
Sample and Hold Error Check Code Generator:
circuit: Coverts the Identifies various error
analog information checking techniques
into PAM samples
Switched Faults: Allows to
identify particular faults on
the transmitter

Analog to Digital Converter: The PAM samples are sequentially

passed here. The converter is controlled by the signals from the
transmitter timing logic and produces digital output.

Pulse-Code Modulation
 The message signal is represented by a sequence of coded pulses.
 Narrow rectangular pulses are used.
 A low-pass filter is used to prevent aliasing.
 Encoding is used to map representation levels to binary words called codewords (e.g.,
the codeword for a level can be its binary representation).

Sampling
(a)
Analog signal (b) : sampled version of
where,
sampling period is & sampling rate is samples/s (Hz).

Sampling theorem:
A signal that has only frequency components less than W Hz (bandlimited signal) may be
completely recovered from samples taken at the rate of 2W samples per second (Nyquist rate).

Quantisation

  Lbe L decision levels
 If the quantiser maps the amplitude of the continuous signal into a reconstruction level

 is called step size.

 If the step-size is constant, the quantisation is said to be uniform.

 Quantisation is the name given to the process of allocating binary values to the PAM samples
obtained after sampling. This binary values change in discrete steps as shown below.

Analog to Digital converter
 The modulation process converts an analog information signal into a digital format for
transmission over communication system.

 This process is known as Analog-to-Digital (A/D) conversion.

 The PAM samples, which are still analog in nature are passed sequentially to the A/D
converter.

 This produces output as binary coded number/word, indicated in bit state through LED’s

Initial Conditions on the board

• Mode switch in FAST position.

• Sync.Code Generator “on/off” switch to OFF
position
• Error check code selector switches to
OFF(00) position.
• All four switched faults to OFF position.
• DC1/ DC2 and 1KHz/2KHz amplitude

Instructions for the Experiment
Practical Exercise 2.19 - Quantisation

• Connect the DC1 output to CH0 input and DC2 output to CH1 input
on the MODICOM 3/1 board
• The DC2 amplitude control should be set at fully counter-clockwise
position.
• Connect a multimeter to CH0 input as shown in the figure.

• Adjust the DC1 amplitude preset counter-clockwise to obtain the DC inputs in the multimeter as
shown in your work book.
• The A/D converter block with LED’s (D0 to D6) will represent the output in bit state for
corresponding DC inputs.
• An illuminated LED represents a “1” state and non-illuminated LED indicated “0” state.
• Record the results in your workbook.
• Write your comments on the Output in Notes space given in your workbook.
