Lesson 8: Soil Bearing Capacity For Shallow Foundations

This document contains a lecture on soil bearing capacity for shallow foundations. It defines foundation and types of foundations. It discusses Terzaghi's bearing capacity theory for shallow foundations where depth is less than width. It covers the effects of groundwater table on bearing capacity. It defines factor of safety and provides sample problems calculating bearing capacity factors, ultimate and allowable bearing capacities for different soil and groundwater conditions. Sample problems include square and circular footings with given soil properties and groundwater depths.

Lesson 8
Soil Bearing Capacity for
Shallow Foundations
Lecture slides by
Engr. Patrick Louie Jay R. Federizo, CE
*Foundation:
-is that part of a structure which transmits the
building load directly into the underlying soil.

*Types of Foundation:
1. Spread Foundation
2. Mat Foundation
3. Pile Foundation
4. Drilled Shaft-Foundation
*Terzaghi’s Bearing Capacity:
Accdg. to Terzaghi, a foundation may be defined
as a shallow foundation if the depth Df is less than
or equal to its width B.
*Effect of Groundwater Table:
*Effect of Groundwater Table:
*Effect of Groundwater Table:
*Factor of Safety:
Sample Problem #1:
A square footing for a multinational building has its
bottom 2.5m below the ground surface. It has a dimension
of 1.2m x 1.2m. Angle of friction of soil is 28 0. Unit weight
of soil is 16KN/m3 with cohesion of 22KPa. It has a
saturated unit weight of 18KN/m3. Use F.S. = 3.
A. Compute the bearing capacity factor Nɤ.
B. Compute the net allowable bearing capacity of the
soil if there is a water table at the bottom side of the
footing.
C. Compute the net allowable load that the footing
could carry if there is a water table at a depth of 0.80m
from the bottom of the footing.
Sample Problem #2:
A square footing has a dimension of 1.2m x 1.2m and
has its bottom 1m below the ground surface.
A. If the ground water table is located at a depth of
1.2m below the ground surface, compute the allowable
load that the footing could carry if it has a factor of safety
of 3.
B. Find the ultimate bearing capacity of the soil if the
ground water table is at the bottom of the footing.
C. Find the ultimate bearing capacity of the soil if the
ground water table is 0.5m above the bottom of the
footing.

From the table: Nc= 35; Nq= 22; Nɤ= 19
Sample Problem #3:
A circular footing shown with a diameter of 1.22m has its
bottom 1.22m below the ground surface. Groundwater table is
at a depth of 0.61m below the ground surface. Unit weight of
soil is 18.08KN/m3 with no cohesion. Angle of internal friction of
the soil is 320. The saturated unit weight of soil below the
ground water table is 21.07KN/m3.
A. Compute the ultimate bearing capacity of the soil
considering the shape factors and depth factors.
B. Compute the allowable gross bearing capacity if the factor
of safety is 3.
C. Compute the safe gross load that the footing can carry.
 From the table for Ø=320: Nc= 35.49, Nq= 23.18 and Nɤ= 30.22
Sample Problem #4: For Practice
A square footing is shown in the figure. Determine the safe gross
load (factor of safety of 3) that the footing can carry. Use the modified
general ultimate bearing capacity equation.
