Salmonella Typhi & Typoid Fever

Salmonella Typhi bacteria causes typhoid fever, a systemic infection characterized by long-lasting fever and potential inflammation of the intestines and liver. Common symptoms include evening fever, headache, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, and constipation or diarrhea. The bacteria enters the body through contaminated food or water and spreads through the intestines and bloodstream. Prevention strategies include maintaining hygiene, keeping environments clean, thoroughly cooking food, and proper waste disposal. Treatment often involves antibiotics like chloramphenicol, ceftriaxone, or cefixime which can selectively damage the bacteria without harming human cells.

1. Definition Of Typoid
Typhoid fever is an infectious disease that is spread throughout the
world, and is still the biggest health problem in developing and tropical
countries such as Southeast Asia, Africa and Latin America. typoid fever
caused by salmonella typhi bacteria so that there is a systemic infection
with a picture of a fever that lasts a long time, the presence of
bacteremia accompanied by inflammation that can damage the
intestine and liver organs.
2. Sign and Symtomp
• especially evening / night fever
• headache, muscle aches
• anorexia
• nausea
• throw up
• obstipation or diarrhea.
3. Causes
Typoid fever is caused due to infection with Salmonella typhi bacteria.
Germs penetrate the intestinal epithelial mucosa, multiply in the
lamina propina and then enter the mesentery lymph nodes. After that,
it enters the circulation of blood so that the first bacteremia that is
asympathetic occurs, then the germ enters the organs, especially the
liver and bone marrow, followed by the release of cumulants and
endotoxins into the bloodstream, causing a second bacteremia. Germs
in the liver will re-enter the small intestine, so that an infection occurs
as before and some germs are removed with feces.
4. Prevention
• Maintain personal hygiene
• Keep the environment clean
• Wash food thoroughly and cook until cooked
• Use of WC for bowel movements
• Waste control
5. Treatment
• Typoid treatment using Chloramphenicol is still a type of antibiotic used in the treatment of
typhoid fever (53.55%) and is the first choice antibiotic given for typhoid fever. The drug is
relatively inexpensive but in other studies it has shown that the relapse rate in the treatment
of typhoid fever using chloramphenicol is higher when compared to the use of cotrimoxazole.
• Research conducted by Musnelina et al. (2004) at Fatmawati Hospital showed that there was
a third generation of cephalosporin drug used for the treatment of typhoid fever in children,
ceftriaxone (26.92%) and cefixime (2.19%). However, of these 2 types of drugs, ceftriaxone
has become an alternative choice for the treatment of typhoid fever, which is widely used in
the Children's Health Section of Fatmawati Hospital during the period January 2001
December 2002. Ceftriaxone is considered a patent and effective drug for the treatment of
short-term typhoid fever. The beneficial nature of this drug is that it can selectively damage
the structure of germs and does not interfere with the cells of the human body, has a broad
spectrum, tissue penetration is quite good, and germ resistance is still limited.
