Centrifugation: Mohammad Areez Khan CMS: 19993

Centrifugation is a separation process that uses centrifugal force to promote the accelerated settling of particles in a solid-liquid mixture. During centrifugation, two distinct phases are formed - one with denser substances moving outward due to centrifugal acceleration, while less dense objects are displaced to the center. Centrifuges apply a force perpendicular to the axis of spin, and come in various types from desktop to ultracentrifuges. Common rotor types include fixed-angle, swinging bucket, and continuous tubular rotors.

CENTRIFUGATION

SEDIMENTATION:

 What is Sedimentation?

 Sedimentation is the tendency for particles in suspension to

settle out of the fluid in which they are entrained and come to
rest against a barrier.
 This is due to their motion through the fluid in response to the
forces acting on them: these forces can be due to gravity,
centrifugal acceleration, or electromagnetism.

CENTRIFUGATION:

 What is Centrifugation?

 Centrifugation is a separation process which uses the action of

centrifugal force to promote accelerated settling of particles in a solid-
liquid mixture.
 Two distinct major phases are formed in the vessel
during centrifugation.

MACHINES:
 A centrifuge is a piece of equipment that puts an object
in rotation around a fixed axis (spins it in a circle),
applying a force perpendicular to the axis of spin
(outward) that can be very strong.

 The centrifuge works using the sedimentation principle,

where the centrifugal acceleration causes denser
substances and particles to move outward in the radial
direction. At the same time, objects that are less dense are
displaced and move to the center.

Types of Rotors

 Fixed-angle rotors are designed to hold the sample containers at a constant

angle relative to the central axis.

 Swinging head (or swinging bucket) rotors, in contrast to fixed-angle

centrifuges, have a hinge where the sample containers are attached to the
central rotor. This allows all of the samples to swing outwards as the
centrifuge is spun.

 Continuous tubular rotors do not have individual sample vessels and are
used for high volume applications.
