The document summarizes a presentation on the design analysis of planetary gear trains. It discusses the aim to introduce planetary gear trains used in automobile transmissions. It provides a brief history of planetary gears and describes the main components. It explains how planetary gear trains work in automobiles by altering the speed of rotation through clutches and bands to provide different gear ratios. The summary concludes by noting the compact size and high efficiency of planetary gear trains as advantages and their complex design as a disadvantage.

“Design Analysis of Planetary Gear Train”

By Mg Min Thant Khin Maung

VI.Mech-54
Outline of Presentation

• Aim and Objective

• History
• Types of gear train
• Components
• Planetary gear train in automobile
• Working Principle
• Advantages and Disadvantages
• Future Scope
• Conclusion
Aim and Objective

• The aim of this presentation is to introduce about

the planetary gear train used in automobile
transmission system.

• The main objective of the planetary gear train is to

supply demanded gear ratios in an interval with
small space and without the need of clutching or
detaching gears to each other.
History

• In the 2nd-century AD, Ptolemy used rotating

deferent and epicycles that form planetary gear
trains to predict the motions of the planets.
• Richard of Wallingford is credited for reinventing
planetary gearing for an astronomical clock in the
14th century.
Gear Train

• A gear train consists of several gears that are

meshed together to transmit the power from input
shaft to the output one. The gear works as reducer
or accelerator.
• There are four types of gear train
• Simple gear train
• Compound gear train
• Epicyclic gear train
• Reverted gear train
Components

• It consists of three types of gear

a. The sun gear
b. The planet gear and
c. The Ring gear
• And the planetary gear carrier which connects the
planet gears.

Planetary Gear Train In Automobile

• In automobile, the planetary gear train is composed

of planetary gear set as well as clutches and bands.

•  It is the mechanical system that provides the

various gear ratios by altering the speed of rotation
of the output shaft depending on which planetary
gears are locked.
Continued
Working Principle in Automatic Transmission

• To effect gear changes, clutches or bands are used

to hold a particular member of the planetary gear
set motionless, while allowing another member to
rotate, transmitting torque and producing gear
reductions or overdrive ratios.
Advantages and Disadvantages

• Compact size • complex and costly

• High efficiency design.
• Low backlash and
• High torque-to weight
ratio
Future Scope

• The Research could be further extended through

further optimization by varying different materials
and calculating different gear ratios.
• The loads with different materials could be further
analyzed and stresses derived on the site.
Conclusion

• This presentation has presented about the

introduction of planetary gear train, its working
principle, advantages and disadvantages.
Furthermore, the future scope of the thesis.
