MELC 2 Use Conditionals in Expressing Arguments

The document discusses present unreal conditionals, which refer to present actions or situations that are unlikely or impossible by using "if" clauses with "were" to describe a different present situation. Present unreal conditionals are used to imagine results for unlikely present situations. The grammar structure for present unreal conditionals uses "if" plus the past tense or "were" in the if clause, followed by "would" and the base verb.

CONDITIONALS EXPRESSING

ARGUMENTS
SUBTITLE
PRESENT
What is a conditional?
something that is conditional will only happen if
something else happens.
Conditional Clause
A conditional clause usually begins with 'if' and says what must
happen or exist in order for the information in the main part of
the sentence to be true
So, what is present unreal
conditional
Often called the "unreal" conditional because it is used for
present unreal impossible or improbable situations.
This conditional provides an imaginary result for a given
situation. It is very unlikely that the condition will be
fulfilled.
Use of present unreal conditionals
Refer to an action in the present that could happen if the present
situation were different.
I don't really expect the situation to change because it is very unlikely.

If you WERE the president of your

country, what would you do?

 Examples:

-If I were a politician, I would earn a lot of money

-if I were an English teacher, I would teach English for free
-if I were rich, I would stop working for the rest of my life
 In conditional type 2, we usually use in the if clause "were" instead of "was"
even if the pronoun is I, he, she or it.

NOTE "was" is also a possible form.

If I was a happy boy, why am I so angry?
