Review of Related Literature: Writing The

This document discusses the importance of conducting a review of related literature for quantitative research studies. It defines the literature review as a written summary of past research on the topic that organizes subtopics and justifies the need for the proposed study. The literature review serves to document how the current study adds to existing literature and provides evidence that the study is needed. It also helps researchers learn from past studies and develop research skills. The document provides guidance on identifying key terms, locating literature, critically evaluating sources, organizing the literature, and writing the literature review section.

PRACTICAL RESEARCH 2: QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH

MEANING OF RRL
• A review of related literature is an analysis of
man’s written or spoken knowledge of the
world. You examine representations of man’s
thinking about the world to determine the
connection of your research with what people
already know about it.
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
WHAT IS THE LITERATURE REVIEW?

• A written summary of journal articles, books, and other documents

that describe the past and current state of information on the topic of
your research study.
• It also organizes the literature into subtopics, and documents the need
for a proposed study.
• In the most rigorous form of research, educators base this review
mainly on research reported in journal articles.
• In composing a literature review, you may cite articles that are both
quantitative and qualitative studies.
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
WHY IS LITERATURE REVIEW NECESSARY?
• You conduct a literature review to document how your study adds to the existing
literature.
• You also complete a literature review to provide evidence that educators need your
study.
• Conducting a literature review also builds your research skills of using the library and
being an investigator who follows leads in the literature, all useful experiences to have
as a researcher.
• Reading the literature also helps you learn how other educators compose their
research studies and helps you find useful examples and models in the literature for
your own research.
• By conducting a literature search using computer databases, you develop skills in
locating needed materials in a timely manner.
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
In a quantitative study, researchers discuss the literature extensively at
the beginning of a study. This serves two major purposes: it justifies the
importance of the research problem, and it provides a rationale for (and
foreshadows) the purpose of the study and research questions or
hypotheses.

In many quantitative studies, the authors include the literature in a

separate section titled “Review of Related Literature” to highlight the
important role it plays. The authors also incorporate the literature into
the end of the study, comparing the results with prior predictions or
expectations made at the beginning of the study.
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
5 STEPS IN CONDUCTING A LITERATURE REVIEW
1. IDENTIFY KEY TERMS to use in your search for literature.
2. LOCATE LITERATURE about a topic by consulting several types of materials
and data-bases, including those available at an academic library and on the
internet.
3. CRITICALLY EVALUATE AND SELECT THE LITERATURE for your review.
4. ORGANIZE THE LITERATURE you have selected by abstracting or taking
notes of the literature and taking notes on the literature and developing a
visual diagram of it.
5. WRITE A LITERATURE REVIEW that reports summaries of the literature for
inclusion in your research report.
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
WRITE A LITERATURE REVIEW

• Gives an expanded or new understanding of an existing work
• State the intentions in conducting the review and to name the
sources of information

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

YOUR LITERATURE REVIEW MAY ANSWER THE FOLLOWING
QUESTIONS:
1. What are the studies that were conducted about my topic?
a. Same topic but different locus
b. Same topic but different respondents
c. Same topic but different research questions (S.O.P.)
2. What are the studies that offer answers to my research questions?

• If reviewed studies (asked in No.2) contradict to one another, a blindspot may

have been detected.
• While if there are only few studies regarding your (1) topic in general, or (2)
research questions in particular, a blankspot may have been detected.

HOW TO DO IT – GENERAL TIP:

• It’s like you’re doing an academic essay (with

not introduction; go straight to the body and
conclusion), and the topic of the essay is your
research and the previous researches that
