• CONCEPTUAL SKETCHES
For this project Gehry found inspiration in soaring glass-and-steel structures of the 19th century, including the Jardin’s own
Palmarium .(FIG1) The center’s design features a number of the hallmarks—voluptuous swirls, dynamic asymmetries, an
irrepressible optimism—that characterize Gehry’s earlier groundbreaking works. conceptual sketches showing how elevation and
plan of museum developed from inspiration foam of Jordin’s palmarium and Susanne yacht 1911. (FIG 2)
BASIC PLANNING of FONDATION LOUIS VUITTON MUSEUM is to keep private and public space separate from each by
creating buffer zone in between.(FIG 3).
Of course, museums don’t hang paintings on glass walls, so the architect and his team essentially conceived a
building within a building. The 46m-high abstract structure resembles a cloud, a chrysalis or a sailing ship and is
designed to blend into the natural surroundings of the park.
Having a total surface area of 11,000m² with 3,850m² of museum space, the building is built on the edge of a water
garden with a reflecting pool and a cascading waterfall.

Space organization and Circulation
Basic planning of museum is based on the segregation of private and public space.
The building has eleven galleries, an auditorium, the Grotto and terraces.
The sides of this near the reception area are fully glazed. One opens to the outside water cascade, the eastern side. The
auditorium can accommodate spectators 360-1000, flexibility achieved by a particular automatic seating configuration. Its
flexibility allows him to transform into an exhibition hall if necessary. With impeccable sound and light engineering is a
versatile space open to different events.
Although the galleries vary in square footage, height, and architectural flourishes—some are extremely tall and capped by
twisting light wells—the rooms all possess conventionally squared-up walls.

The museum can be entered from the park from all four cardinal points. Within the square building, a central circular
atrium links an entrance level with the three exhibition levels. These are arranged as terraces projecting further outwards
on each higher floor, forming an inverted pyramid. The upwardly projecting story's effect in each of the layers below a
shading, which is part of the energy efficiency concept.
As the dominant feature, the ramp offers perspectives into the entrance hall and exhibition areas. Whereas the first to third
floors are used solely for exhibition purposes, the fourth floor also contains conference rooms, research rooms, offices and
the library.
A notable feature is the roof structure, which carries the weight of the floor slabs that hang from it.
Main museum space is surrounded by temporary exhibition area and rich landscape elements.

Privacy factor (silent vs. noisy ) AND City & museum connection
• Entire museum is designed on the basis of VIETNAM’s traditional architecture style i.e. steeped roof system but in a
inverted form and cross ventilation. One of the central realities when planning the Hanoi museum was the climatic
condition of Vietnam, which significantly influence life in the city, with high humidity and extremely hot summers. Initial
idea is to protect interior from excessive heat and sunlight.
• main circulation of museum is carried out through central ramp which is very noisy as compared with other parts of
museum.
• The freestanding museum is placed in the midst of an artificial park landscape with water basins and large areas for
outdoor exhibits, monuments and traditional villages in the style of old Hanoi.
• semi-transparent green glass sits behind ornamental panels, creating a gauzy and diffused facade that changes
depending on the direction it faces. indirect light filters through the exterior skin, providing large exhibition spaces
with a soft luminosity. AIKTC SOA I AD8
