Introduction and Terminologies

This document provides an introduction to differential equations. It defines a differential equation as an equation containing derivatives of unknown functions with respect to independent variables. Differential equations are classified as ordinary or partial based on the number of independent variables. They are also classified by order, which refers to the highest derivative, and degree, which refers to the exponent of the highest derivative. The document provides examples of determining the order and degree of differential equations. It distinguishes between the general solution, which is the set of all solutions, and a particular solution, which is a single solution. Exercises are included for students to identify whether a solution is general or particular.

Differential Equation
ENGR REN
What is DE?
Is an equation containing the derivatives of one or more
unknown functions (dependent variables) with respect to
one or more independent variables.
CLASSIFICATION BY TYPE
ORDINARY DE
An equation containing only one independent variable thus
having only ordinary derivatives in the equation
Example:
1. dy – xdx = 0
2. y’ = y sec x
PARTIAL DE
An equation containing two or more independent variables thus
having partial derivatives in the equation
CLASSIFICATION BY ORDER
ORDER OF A DE
The order of a DE is the order of the highest ordered derivative
which appears in the equation.
DEGREE OF A DE
The degree of a DE is the degree (exponent) of the highest ordered derivative
which appears in the equation
