Lec No. 01 Introductions To Survey

This document provides an overview of plane surveying. It discusses that plane surveying involves collecting land information and examining areas to create maps and descriptions. It also describes the primary divisions of surveying as geodetic and plain surveying, depending on whether the curvature of the Earth is taken into account. Various classifications of surveys are presented according to area, purpose, methods used, and instruments employed. The document concludes with discussing the principal goals of surveys and the work of a surveyor, which involves field work, office work, and equipment maintenance.

Plane Surveying

CEE- 201

1
SURVEYING
To collect information
 Look carefully and thoroughly at
 Examine and record the area and features of (an area
of land) so as to construct the map, plan or
description
 Examine and report on the condition (of building),
specially for the perspective buyer
 The art and science of obtaining quantified and
qualified measurement, the interpretation of these
measurements and a meaning full presentation of
result

2
Primary Division of Survey

 Geodetic Survey
 Plain Survey

3
Geodetic Survey
If the curvature of the earth is taken into consideration
then the survey is called geodetic survey.

The surface of the earth is a sphere because large

distances and are as are covered ,the line connecting any
two points A and B is Curved or as the Arc of great circle .

4
Plain Survey
If the Curvature of earth is not taken into
consideration then the survey is called as Plain Survey.

The surface of the earth taken as plain in small areas .

The line joining two points as a straight line.

Difference of length taken in geodetic and in Plain

survey is 0.1 m in 18.2 m and 0.3 m in 54.3 km and 0.5
m in 90 km

5
Classification of Survey

6
According to Area
 Land Survey

 Marine Survey

 Hydrographic Survey

 Astronomical Survey

7
According to Purpose
 Engineering Survey

 Topographical Survey

 Military Survey

 Mine Survey

 Geological Survey

 Archaeological Survey
8
According to Method Used
 Triangulation Survey

 Traverse Survey

9
According to the Instruments Employed
 Chain Survey

 Compass Survey

 Plain table Survey

 Tachometric Survey

 Theodolite Survey

 Photographic Survey
10
Main Classification of Survey
 Reconnaissance Survey

 Preliminary Survey

11
Reconnaissance Survey
The survey to determine the feasibility and rough cost
of surveying ,without any instruments, is called as
Reconnaissance Survey

Preliminary Survey
For collecting more precise data to choose the best
location for the work and to estimate the exact
quantities

12
Land Surveying

13
Purpose of land Surveying
 To secure the data for exact description of the
boundaries of a piece of land
To determine its area
To secure the necessary data for making a plan
 To re- establish the boundaries of a piece of a land
which has been previously surveyed .
 To divide a piece of land into a number of units

14
USE of Survey
 Survey is an art and science for the establishment of
map

 Engineers to be familiar with the principals and

practice of surveying

 In all engineering projects, the preparation of

accurate plans and sections is the first necessity.

15
Principal of Survey
Two cardinal principal upon which various method
are based
1. To work from whole to part

2. To fix the position of new stations by at least two

independent points.

16
Work of the Surveyor
The work for surveyor, may be divided into three parts

1. Field Work

2. Office work

3. Care and adjustment of the equipment
