Properties of Addition

This document discusses the three properties of addition: 1. The identity property states that adding any number to zero yields the original number. 2. The commutative property means the order of the addends does not change the sum. 3. The associative property allows adding groups of numbers in any order without changing the result. Examples are provided to illustrate each property.

Properties of ADDITION
PROPERTIES OF ADDITION
3 PROPERTIES OF ADDITION

1. Identity Property
2. Commutative Property
3. Associative Property
1. Identity Property

+ =
10 + 0 = 10
-when we add numbers to zero the sum is
also the number itself.
Examples:

• 4+0=4
• 26+0=26
• 0+7=7
• 85+0=85
Commutative Property

+ = 10
4 + 6
+ = 10
6 + 4
2. Commutative Property
• changing the position
or order of the
addends does not
change the sum
Examples:

• 4+6=10 6+4=10
• 5+7=12 7+5=12
• 9+5=14 5+9=14
• 3+5=8 5+3=8
Associative Property
Examples:

• (4+ 2 ) + 3= 9 4+ ( 2 + 3 ) = 9

• (8 + 5) + 4 = 17 8 + (5 + 4 ) = 17

• (6 + 3) + 2 = 11 6 + (3 + 2 ) = 11
Its QUIZ time!!!...
IDENTITY, COMMUTATIVE, ASSOCIATIVE

6+0=6
Identity Property
(4 + 5) + 2 = 11 4 + ( 5 + 2 ) = 11

Associative Property
7 + 5 = 12 5 + 7 = 12

Commutative Property
( 8 + 2 ) + 4 = 14 8 +( 2 + 4 ) = 14

Associative Property
9+0=0

Identity Property
4 + 8 = 12 8 + 4 = 12

Commutative Property
