Mode Choice / Modal Split

The document discusses factors that influence transportation mode choice and different types of modal split models. Key factors include trip purpose, time of day, travel time, costs, availability of parking, comfort, reliability, and security. Modal split models include trip-end models that are accurate for short trips with little congestion but insensitive to policy, and trip-interchange models that are more useful for long-term modeling by considering journey and mode characteristics. Aggregate models are based on zonal data while disaggregate models use household or individual data. Binary and multinomial logit models are discussed to calculate mode share based on generalized costs. Sample problems demonstrate calculating trips and fares by mode.

MODE CHOICE / MODAL SPLIT

TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING (CE123) ENGR. JOMAR S. RAMOS

Factors influencing the choice of mode
2. Characteristics of the journey:
Mode choice is strongly influenced by:
(a) The trip purpose; for example, the journey to work is
normally easier to undertake by public transport than
other journeys because of its regularity and the
adjustment possible in the long run;
(b) Time of the day when the journey is
undertaken;
(c) Late trips are more difficult to accommodate
by public transport.
Factors influencing the choice of mode
3. Characteristics of the transport facility:

Quantitative factors are:

(a) relative travel time: in-vehicle, waiting and walking
times by each mode;
(b) relative monetary costs (fares, fuel and direct costs);
(c) availability and cost of parking
Factors influencing the choice of mode

Qualitative factors which are less easy to measure are:

(a) comfort and convenience;

(b) reliability and regularity;
(c) protection, security;
Types of modal split models

1. Trip-end modal split models

- The advantage is that these models could be very

accurate in the short run, if public transport is
available and there is little congestion
- Limitation is that they are insensitive to policy
decisions
Types of modal split models

2. Trip-interchange modal split models

- post-distribution model
- include the characteristics of the journey and that of
the alternative modes available to undertake them
- beneficial for long term modeling
Types of modal split models
3. Aggregate and disaggregate models

Aggregate Models - based on zonal and inter-zonal

information

Disaggregate Models - based on household or individual

data.
Binary Logit Model
Binary Logit Model
Binary Logit Model

This functional form is called logit, where cij is

called the generalized cost and β is the parameter
Logit Function for calibration. The graph shows the proportion of
trips by mode 1 (T 1 ij/Tij ) against cost difference.
SAMPLE PROBLEMS
Let the number of trips from zone i to zone j is 5000, and two modes are
available which has the characteristics given in below. Compute the trips
made by mode bus, and the fare that is collected from the mode bus. If the
fare of the bus is reduced to 6, then find the fare collected.

Let the number of trips from zone i to zone j is 5000, and two modes are
available which has the characteristics given in below. Compute the trips
made by the three modes and the fare required to travel by each mode.
