FAMILY, MARRIAGE AND

COMMUNITY
FAMILY

• A family is founded in a single household, commonly united by ties of marriage


and blood. They mingle with each other as father, mother, children and siblings.
ORIGIN OF FAMILY

• The biblical belief in the story of creation.


• Sociocultural evolution belief.
In this belief Friedrich Engels expanded Morgan’s theory of human progress
in his work, ORIGIN OF THE FAMILY.
Accordingly, family system developed from the consanguine family, to
punaluan family, to pairing family, and lastly to monogamous family.
CONSANGUINE FAMILY

• Group of person descending from a single pair, and their descendants in each
generation are brother and sisters, as they are husband and wives of one another.
PUNALUAN FAMILY

• A circle of persons from one generation usually bound by common ancestral


mother.
PAIRING FAMILY

• A product of marriage between unrelated couple, but was arranged by their


mothers.
MONOGAMOUS FAMILY

• Family brought by two contracting partners, who mutually agreed to marry


because of love and compassion.
2 TYPES OF FAMILY

• Nuclear Family
• Extended family
NUCLEAR FAMILY

• It is composed of a couple, commonly called father and mother and their


children.
EXTENDED FAMILY

• It is the extension of the nuclear family established by unilineal descent group,


that could either come from paternal or maternal ancestry.
2 CATEGORIES DESCENT SYSTEM

• Consanguine
• Affine
CONSANGUINE

• Refers to people who are connected with another because of blood relationship.it has 2 types;
a) Lineal relatives that include the descendants and ascendants.
i. Descendants- involve people of next generation related to a person through his/her children.
ii. Ascendants- involve relatives from earlier generations directly allied to the person.
b) Collateral relatives are relatives associated with the lineal relatives such as uncles, aunts, and
cousins.
3 TYPES OF DESCENT SYSTEM PRINCIPLE
OF KINDSHIP
• Unilineal descent
• Cognatic descent
• Fictive kindship
UNILINEAL DESCENT

• Lineage of relationship is traced only with single line of ancestors, either through
the father, known as patrilineal, or mother, called as matrilineal.
COGNATIC DESCENT
• The tie of relationship is traced through both the patrilineal and the matrinileal, modified in
different forms such as:

Bilineal- an individual is both a member of his paternal and maternal descent.


Parallel descent- men trace their kinship patrilineally and women matrilineally.
Ambilineal descent- an individual can choose his prefferd descent, either from patrilineage
or matrilineage.

Bilateral descent- everyone, as a member of both fathers and mothers families is recognized
as relative.
FICTIVE KINDSHIP
• A relationship associated by attribution in a family rather than birth or marriage. This can be
define into 3 types.

Adoption- relationship ensued from the process assuming the parenting of a child, transferring
permanently all the rights and responsibilities of the biological parents to the adopting parents.

Figurative usage- affiliation is extended to a person who is not a kin, but plays a role similar
to that kinsperson.

Ritual kinship- association by co-parenting but different to that of actual kinship, like the
godparent-godchild relationship.
